Chris Baker Resigned
Per Chris Russell 3 years 12 Million
According to ESPN 980 Washington's Chris Russell, the deal includes $4 million guaranteed. Baker moved all over the defensive line last season before starting the final three games at left end. Going on 27, Baker played 418 snaps, notching 28 tackles and one sack. He's expected to open 2014 as a starting end. It's about as good of a deal as Baker could have hoped for. per Rotoworld |
Re: Chris Baker Resigned
Good to hear he's expected to start.

That's interesting. I guess Baker DE-Coefeld NT-Bowen DE? Jenkins is the rotation guy? Id have to believe Carriker is a cut. Wonder if we will keep Bowen? |
Re: Chris Baker Resigned
Wouldn't be a surprise if Bowen gets cut. Carriker comes back with lower cap #.
|
Re: Chris Baker Resigned
Like Baker. Seems a bit high - not astronomically, cripplingly so - just a little more than had we let him test. Not sure what the going rate for him would have been. Probably spells the likely end of Carriker though.
Even if a little over value, I would rather lock up a guy like this and move forward. It may be that after years of playing hard ball with our own guys and letting them walk (R. Clark, A. Pierce come to mind) maybe we B. Allen is trying to "change the culture" a bit. If so, expect a generous P. Riley contract announcement soon. |

Worthington is in the mix too. I like the idea of getting rid of Bowen. Carriker at a low number wouldnt be bad, but he is someone you couldnt depend on to play 16. Hope this is Jenkins year to shine. Coefield shifting to DE and bringing in another NT has always been talked about as well... |
Re: Chris Baker Resigned
No one on the line, other than Cofield, is much more than a solid journeyman.
In light of that, between Carriker and Bowen, it is probably whoever comes back cheaper. Both will be 30 in the upcoming year. Both contracts end next year. Bowen is a 7.02M cap hit, Carriker a 6.76M. Releasing Carriker is a 3.24M cap savings this year, Bowen 1.98 this year, 5.5M next year. Given that AC has been injured and his cap hit is approximately the same as Bowen's but the cap saving is significantly more in cutting AC this year and Bowen next, I am betting AC is gone but could be welcomed back at a vet min in which case he would be fighting Bowen for the roster spot. ... and Kedric Gholston survives another year. |

Wouldnt mind spending a high draft pick on DE |

BTW - cap info from the Warpath Salary Cap page. Always the best resource out there.

Re: Chris Baker Resigned
Shame that he resigned, I was hoping he could really contribute this year.
:D
Wouldn't be a surprise if Bowen gets cut. Carriker comes back with lower cap #.
Bowen's production last season vs. really high cap number...he has to go or renegotiate. If Carriker comes back with a "prove it or move it" deal, I'm all for it |
Re: Chris Baker Resigned
Baker is a strong physical DL that that does not get pushed backwards. He holds his grown.
Kedrick Gholston on the other hand is not any of that. With a cap # at $1.2M, it is time to replace him with a cheaper option. The other cap number that jumps out at me is Josh Morgan. Can that be right? $10.1M for 2014? No, that will not work either. Time to renegotiate a new cap friendly deal or he goes away. |

Re: Chris Baker Resigned
Baker was balling at the end of the year. Seems like he ( and Cofield) would be a better fit as a 4-3 tackle.
|
Re: Chris Baker Resigned
I think Cofield would work better at nose tackle than DE. He has played there before.
|
Re: Chris Baker Resigned
From the Cap page, top guys in terms of cap savings (after T. Williams) first number is cap hit this year, second is cap savings if released:
Josh Morgan $10,100; $6,800 London Fletcher $6,200; $4,100 Adam Carriker $6,760; $3,240 Pierre Garcon - $9,700; $3,100 B. Meriweather - $3,400; $2,200 Stephen Bowen - $7,020; $1,980 Will Montgomery - $3,425; $1,925 Chris Chester - $4,300; $1,700 Bolded guys are the ones see going based on cap hit, production, savings, age, etc. |
Re: Chris Baker Resigned
Morgan's deal has a team void option after the '13 season, so yeah he's not going to see that $$. Nothing to worry about there.
|
Re: Chris Baker Resigned
I'm glad we got Baker resigned. The money seems a bit high when you look at his production, but as long as he starts in 2014, it should be worth it.

Re: Chris Baker Resigned
I like the RE-SIGNING. A good price for a quality player.

Jenkins is the rotation guy? Id have to believe Carriker is a cut. Wonder if we will keep Bowen?
Bowen had microfracture surgery if he's ready in November it'll be within the recovery timeframe. He definitely won't be ready for training camp. Bowen, due to his hefty contract may be cut or asked to take a pay cut. Look for Jenkins to be in the mix for left end starter. Baker may take the nose and Cofield may go to right end? |

Only way u move coefield to end is if with we get a monster hog in the middle which would be fine with me I know in the alignment those ends need to play contain, but too often we weren't let'm go aggressive upfield. Sometime u gotta let them eat, hope haslet lets them loose a lil more |
Re: Chris Baker Resigned
I like the signing, I think he should be in the top 3 DE rotation next year. 1 of Bowen or Carriker needs to be cut now though so we give Baker a chance and save a little money. Don't wanna really say it cause I respect both those guys.
Jenkins, Baker, Carriker (if he can play)/Bowen. I think that is pretty solid. Golston will be the 4th guy. |
Re: Chris Baker Resigned
Cofields gonna get the starting nod though isnt he? Barrys not a DE.. not enough speed for the edge but all the power up front perfect gap guy. This is a depth resigning. Why let him go type of thing nothing to break headlines with.

Re: Chris Baker Resigned
$12M tells me it's more than a depth move. He's being viewed as a starter.

According to Keim, the contract is actually 3 years at 9 mil. But each year has 1 mil in incentives that he can also earn if he hits those incentives. Keim is listing his cap hit as 2 mil first year, 3 mil second year, and 4 mil third year with the chance of an extra 1 mil per year in bonuses. "DL Chris Baker Signed a three-year, $12-million deal with $4 million guaranteed. That sounds like starter-type money (albeit not a high level one), but it’s certainly not guaranteed starter money. He has $1 million in incentives that are not likely to be earned -- based on play time, sack totals and Pro Bowl appearances -- each of the three years and his cap number is only $2 million this year and tops out at $4 million in the final year of the contract. The deal averages $3 million per season. It allows the Redskins to keep a young, improving lineman who can help them at multiple spots: end, nose tackle and nickel rusher. Even if he doesn’t start he will play a lot." Re: Chris Baker Resigned
There are incentives that he probably won't reach so the deal is basically 3yrs 9million as per Keim.
Can't post link typing of my phone it's smart not me LOL. |

It's a good deal for both sides. |
Re: Chris Baker Resigned
Go Chris Baker, hey we developed a player... who woulda thunk it?
|
Re: Chris Baker Resigned
Baker just seems to keep getting better since he's been here. I say he breaks out this year and makes the Pro Bowl.
|
Re: Chris Baker Resigned
This is a lot of money for Chris Baker, but not a lot of money for a starting end if that makes sense.
This is great deal for the kind of player they want Chris Baker to be. I'll say that there's been a pretty big gap in the past between the kind of players that they've developed, and the kind of players that they thought they had developed. |

This is great deal for the kind of player they want Chris Baker to be. I'll say that there's been a pretty big gap in the past between the kind of players that they've developed, and the kind of players that they thought they had developed.
The bolded statement is an excellent point. I assume that the Skins are indeed paying for the kind of player they want him to be. Chris seemed to take to the position last season. He improved as the season progressed and he really hustled which makes me think that he wants to be a better player. Now, they need to forget about him as an option at NT and get him to lose some weight so he can be more effective at DE. I think that a slimmed down, faster, quicker Chris Baker could be a solid contributor at DE. |
Re: Chris Baker Resigned
I think this is a solid move, and I agree he would perform well at DE. Cofield has done just fine there at NT, don't mess with a good thing. We can rotate others in a pinch, but Baker at DE looks damn nice.
