Chris Baker Resigned

Per Chris Russell 3 years 12 Million

According to ESPN 980 Washington's Chris Russell, the deal includes $4 million guaranteed. Baker moved all over the defensive line last season before starting the final three games at left end. Going on 27, Baker played 418 snaps, notching 28 tackles and one sack. He's expected to open 2014 as a starting end. It's about as good of a deal as Baker could have hoped for.

That's interesting. I guess Baker DE-Coefeld NT-Bowen DE?

Jenkins is the rotation guy? Id have to believe Carriker is a cut. Wonder if we will keep Bowen?

Wouldn't be a surprise if Bowen gets cut. Carriker comes back with lower cap #.

Like Baker. Seems a bit high - not astronomically, cripplingly so - just a little more than had we let him test. Not sure what the going rate for him would have been. Probably spells the likely end of Carriker though.

Even if a little over value, I would rather lock up a guy like this and move forward. It may be that after years of playing hard ball with our own guys and letting them walk (R. Clark, A. Pierce come to mind) maybe we B. Allen is trying to "change the culture" a bit. If so, expect a generous P. Riley contract announcement soon.

Worthington is in the mix too. I like the idea of getting rid of Bowen. Carriker at a low number wouldnt be bad, but he is someone you couldnt depend on to play 16. Hope this is Jenkins year to shine.

Coefield shifting to DE and bringing in another NT has always been talked about as well...

Re: Chris Baker Resigned

No one on the line, other than Cofield, is much more than a solid journeyman.

In light of that, between Carriker and Bowen, it is probably whoever comes back cheaper. Both will be 30 in the upcoming year. Both contracts end next year. Bowen is a 7.02M cap hit, Carriker a 6.76M. Releasing Carriker is a 3.24M cap savings this year, Bowen 1.98 this year, 5.5M next year.

Given that AC has been injured and his cap hit is approximately the same as Bowen's but the cap saving is significantly more in cutting AC this year and Bowen next, I am betting AC is gone but could be welcomed back at a vet min in which case he would be fighting Bowen for the roster spot.

... and Kedric Gholston survives another year.

BTW - cap info from the Warpath Salary Cap page. Always the best resource out there.

Re: Chris Baker Resigned

Shame that he resigned, I was hoping he could really contribute this year.

Bowen's production last season vs. really high cap number...he has to go or renegotiate.

If Carriker comes back with a "prove it or move it" deal, I'm all for it

Re: Chris Baker Resigned

Baker is a strong physical DL that that does not get pushed backwards. He holds his grown.
Kedrick Gholston on the other hand is not any of that. With a cap # at $1.2M, it is time to replace him with a cheaper option.

The other cap number that jumps out at me is Josh Morgan. Can that be right? $10.1M for 2014? No, that will not work either. Time to renegotiate a new cap friendly deal or he goes away.

Re: Chris Baker Resigned

Baker was balling at the end of the year. Seems like he ( and Cofield) would be a better fit as a 4-3 tackle.

Re: Chris Baker Resigned

I think Cofield would work better at nose tackle than DE. He has played there before.

Re: Chris Baker Resigned

From the Cap page, top guys in terms of cap savings (after T. Williams) first number is cap hit this year, second is cap savings if released:

Josh Morgan $10,100; $6,800
London Fletcher $6,200; $4,100
Adam Carriker $6,760; $3,240
Pierre Garcon - $9,700; $3,100
B. Meriweather - $3,400; $2,200
Stephen Bowen - $7,020; $1,980
Will Montgomery - $3,425; $1,925
Chris Chester - $4,300; $1,700

Bolded guys are the ones see going based on cap hit, production, savings, age, etc.
