The other Moss

From a financial and salary cap standpoint, the offseason wide receiver trade of Santana Moss (to Washington) and Laveranues Coles (to the New York Jets) was the typical disaster for Redskins owner Dan Snyder. On the field, though, it's time to give credit to Snyder, or personnel chief Vinny Cerrato, or coach Joe Gibbs or Snyder consultants Sam Huff and Sonny Jurgensen, or maybe the George Michael Sports Machine for making the deal. Santana Moss now has twice as many touchdowns (four) as the Moss of the Randy variety, who gimped off Sunday, and could miss some time due to an injury.

Despite losing at Kansas City in the Geezer Bowl matchup of Gibbs and Weepin' Dick Vermeil, a game certain to make this week's AARP highlight package, Moss had 10 catches for 173 yards and two touchdowns, including a 78-yard scoring play. More than any other player in a Redskins uniform -- and, yeah, that's counting resurgent quarterback Mark Brunell -- it's Moss who has added much-needed verticality to the stodgy Washington offense. He now has 33 catches for 631 yards, a heady 19.1-yard average, and those four touchdowns. His average touchdown has been for 47.8 yards, a number made even more amazing when one considers that one of his scores Sunday came on a 4-yard reception. The other three trips to the end zone were strictly of the roaming-call ilk: 39, 70 and 78 yards.

To be fair, Coles has suffered from the dearth of quarterback consistency in New York, and has just an 11.1-yard average and one touchdown on 26 receptions. But if it's at all possible to eliminate the financial considerations, and that's always a difficult thing to do in the era of the salary cap, the Moss-Coles trade looks pretty lopsided right now.

The littler Moss is on pace for a 2,019-yard season. Only once in four previous seasons has he topped 1,000 yards. Heck, he's only surpassed 838 yards one time. If Santana can avoid his annual hammy injury, he could certainly earn himself a Pro Bowl berth.

Even though he gave credit it was still littered with underhanded remarks that demonstarte a clear dislike for the Redskins. I think Redskin fans in general have become a little thin skinned when it comes to criticism. However, in this case it is clear that pasta can't stand the skins and it oozes out of every column. I also found it interesting that when the skins were winning thier first three games he completely ignored them in his Monday column, but as soon as they lost he wrote about them again.

How much littler is Moss than Coles. They are listed pretty much as the same size.

Either way Moss plays big and isn't scared to go accross the middle.

i love s moss,buts lets not get on l coles for not going over the middle.he was ten times tougher than i ever thought he would be.but with that said,if you could take the 9 million dollar cap hit out of the equation,this trade would be the steal of the century for the skins

Agreed. That geezer line was definitely uncalled for. Pasta's so useless. I only read the article cuz it was posted in the thread. Otherwise I wouldn't even have bothered clicking on the link.

I think he's calling him the littler Moss because he's smaller in stature and media attention than Randy Moss.

I bet it eats him up inside to have to acknowledge a Redskins player as being exceptional.

He acts like we had some kind of choice in the matter. Cole's wanted out so we had to trade him for someone so we took a negative and turned it into a real positive. In all we made the very best out of a bad situation and if we can keep making those kind of calls great things are coming our way.

Yeah it is kind of crappy how all of a sudden it seems everyone has forgotten that Coles forced our hand (with a little help from that asshole DeMasio) and the Skins had to choose between keeping a disgruntled player, cutting him for nothing or trading him for something. True trading him for Moss cost us 9 mil on the cap this year plus Moss's new deal but the cap hit goes away after this year and we have a good WR in return. They're only real choice was between getting something for something or getting nothing for nothing.

fact is coles would run his and then he was done, moss is aware of what's happening and breaks off his route to help his qb. and if the play breaks down moss keeps running to get open.coles has talent. he also has some issues.moss is a great surprise.and plays the game at wr like it should be. your route is not written in stone, be aware of what's going on(blitz, qb being chased for a sack). moss does this.we haven't had a wr here do that for quite some time.
