Theismann Should Have Been MVP Of SB XVII
I will probably be ridiculed for this statement,I love Riggins as much as the next guy,but i just finished watching sb17 over again and in my opinion theisman should have been the mvp.Riggins was pretty pedestrian up to the point he ran for that dramatic td,29 carries for 101 yds,3.4 avg, mostly blocking got him those yds, theisman on the other hand looked great,he was 8-10 on his first 10 attpts, should have been 9-10 if not a great play by a miami defender, and his scrambling kept a few drives alive. His play where the ball was tipped at the line and he knocked it out of bokampers hands to prevent a sure td was pure hustle and saved us the game.Another thing overlooked that I didnt remember,on our final td drive, riggins fumbles at about the 10 yrd line and a miami player picks it up and is running for a sure td but theisman tackles him,the play was not ruled a fumble because the refs said riggins knee was down, and theisman then throws the final td to downtown charlie brown, had instant replay been available then i believe riggins fumble would have been ruled a fumble, and who knows what would have happenned then, riggins could have turned out to be the goat instead of the hero

Re: Theisman Should Have Been Mvp Of Sb 17
Theismann certainly played a good game with the oppertunities he had, but he just didn't have too much of an overall effect on the game. Riggins ran 15 more times than Theismann passed.
Probably wouldn't have won unless we had both though. |
Re: Theisman Should Have Been Mvp Of Sb 17
That tipped play at the end zone is one of the more underrated plays in Redskins history. It's like when Terry Orr recovered the fumble by Rickey Sanders (I think) on the kickoff return after it was 10-0 in SB XXII. The Broncos recover there and it's a whole other ball game.

if I'm not mistaken, i think that was the only fumble of Rickey Sanders professional career |

I was actually going to say that, but I was thinking more along the lines of most underated play in sb history |
Re: Theismann Should Have Been MVP Of SB XVII
I'm not sure how you can discount one of the most dramatic game changing plays in SB history.
Riggins was clearly the MVP of that game. |

Theismann played solid. He had two picks though. Riggins deserved it. But what I remember about that game was how our defense shut down the Dolphins in the 2nd half. I don't think Miami got a 1st down in the 2nd half. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Ritchie P. does not seem to get enough credit in this town. It all goes to Gibbs becasue he was the HC. But Ritchie was one of the great defensive coordinators in the history of the NFL. |
Re: Theismann Should Have Been MVP Of SB XVII
Can't agree with you there.
38 carries for 166. Both were Superbowl records and Riggins completely dominated the 4th quarter. |
Re: Theismann Should Have Been MVP Of SB XVII
Riggins definitely deserved it, but Theismann was so "aware" in that game. He really did save the game with that tip away from Bokamper. As far as the Terry Orr play against Denver, that was HUGE! Almost as huge as the
3rd down pass to Monk to get the Skins out of their own endzone in the 1st quarter. |
Re: Theismann Should Have Been MVP Of SB XVII
I agree the tip that Theismann had was probably the game saver. I'm not taking anything away from it. But Riggins' TD rumble was a huge play as well and really broke the Dolphins' will.

Not sure if anyone remembers but there was a HUGE no call by the refs that day. When Williams twisted his knee, he actually fumbled the ball and Denver recovered it. However the refs blew it dead. If they had called it a fumble which they should have Denver would have had the ball in our territory up 10-0. Not sure if it would have made a difference but the momentum would have really swung in Denver's favor. |

I remember it vividly,it was def a fumble, game could have def turned out different if broncos go up 17-0,or maybe it would have turned out 42-17 lol we def could have scored more points in that game,we took it easy on them in the 2nd half |
