An average pass at Fred Smoot (not a completion, an attempt) was worth 8.6 yards and one slip. That ranks him 70 best in the league, and that's the most flattering statistic I have on him.
He broke up seven passes last year, which was only 17 fewer than Rogers and 10 fewer than Hall, in about 3/4s the oppertunities. He picked off one pass, which means he's not even offering turnovers to help with his inability to cover.
Basically, I think if you watched all 16 games, at some point, you would have thought to yourself "god, this guy does not belong in the NFL anymore." Smoot has now had one good year in the last 4, so I think if he's a surprise cut in camp in order to try to fit a Doug Dutch, or Byron Westbrook, or depending on how things go in New Orleans, maybe even Leigh Torrence, Smoot's career is probably over.
He's a guy who had his best years with the Redskins, and I'm thankful for that, but those years were few and far between.
