It was Dan Snyder who tried to weasel out of the terms of the contract and Marty called him on it.

Not entirely correct. The contract called for Marty to be both HC and GM but included an option for Snyder to go hire a General Manager. Snyder thought at the time it was too much for Schottenheimer to handle both coach and personnel duties and wanted him to focus only on coaching.
