Wrong.

Marty already was GM and HC because that's what Dan Snyder agreed to according to the terms of the contract. Year one under Marty wasn't so great offensively, and Snyder wanted him to relinquish control of parts of the coaching staff.

It was Dan Snyder who tried to weasel out of the terms of the contract and Marty called him on it.
