ESPN - Clayton: NFC story lines heading into training camp - NFL

Washington Redskins -- Players have been raving about the development of quarterback Jason Campbell. He has had an excellent offseason, but outsiders have to see how he is developing as a starter. Campbell didn't have a great pocket presence in his first year, but he was in a tough spot. Now, this is his team and his time to prove his ability.

yep, and that is the number one thing to watch in training camp this year.

I completely disagree with this statement. It appeared to me that Campbell's pocket presence was above average, especially considering he had no prior NFL experience. One of his best attributes is that he's tough to bring down, and he's able to make plays with his legs when the pocket collapses.

Yeah, I thought he looked great too, with the exception of him throwing it away a couple of times in mid tackle.

Plus, the reports have been that he's not squatting as much as last season, so that's good news. He won't be putting so much pressure on his knees getting off the snap and might be a bit quicker.

that is one thing that I was impressed with was JC's presence in the pocket. He looked good standing in, stepping up, and making plays with his legs. I think the only thing that can come into question is his ability coming in as a starter, to lead a team with playoff asperations, a lot of pressure out of the gate. he came in last year knowing he could make some mistakes. Plus the team wasn't really going anywhere last year. I will take some of bad stuff that he will eventually do during the year, but I just hope he offsets that with some amazing plays that win us games in the crunch.

I'm sorta puzzled on the pocket presence comment myself. JC was cooler under fire than MB that's for sure.

Seriously, in 7 games starting, JC showed more pocket presence than Ramsey ever had. (Yes - I went there)(BTW - I liked Ramsey).

I totally agree with you. I read that statement was like "huh?". He looked hella comfortable in there to me.

HAHA. That's exactly what I thought. I actually thought

"Huh? JC always looked real comfortable...well maybe I am just comparing him to Ramsey who has that Sixth Sense look in his eyes all the time. Nah he looked good to me."

I agree w/all who disagree w/Clayton's statement about presence. Don't get that one, but then again clayton is a stat geek who tends to rely or fall back on #s rather than observation & evaluation of fundamentals.
He got one thing right, it's Campbell's team & that will be the story to watch.

Didn't have a good pocket presence? Did they miss NFL Replay against the Giants? That game wasn't an isolated example either. He has GREAT pocket presence. He's nearly impossible to bring down when under pressure too.

Yeah, I thought that was a little weirdly stated too. Clayton is good typically so I gave him a pass on that.

Yeah, Clayton missed the boat on that one. Just another example of one guy trying to cover and report accurate information on 32 teams.
