Skins look to improve WR-Sign Roydell Williams (could add Hackett)

With all the pulled hamstrings at the WR position.....again? I like the move to add veteran depth at the receiver position.

Posted at 12:04 PM ET, 05/ 3/2009 Skins Offer Deals to Washington, Hackett (Updated)

The Redskins have offered contracts to veteran free agent wide receivers Kelley Washington and D.J. Hackett, who participated in minicamp this weekend, a league source said. Washington is expected to decide on the Redskins' offer after visiting the Baltimore Ravens this week. Hackett was expected to take a physical this afternoon and planned to sign with the team today, a league source said.

If we get Washington that could spell the end for Thrash. Washington does the same exact things only younger and cheaper. Thrash dropped a good number of passes last year also. I was watching the Eagles and Giants games from last year recently and he dropped big 3rd down throws in both games. Catches that should have been made to convert and move the chains. I know he's a cult hero and all but he's not really a viable option anymore.

Plus Thrash is 34 years old. I wonder though, if he stays healthy I would definitely prefer Hacket but Washington is also pretty good when he gets a chance to play. Bascially Hacket has more potential but Washington is the safer pick since Hacket has a hard time staying healthy.

The biggest thing I DON'T want is time going away from Kelly and Thomas. Yes, I want to win now, but we HAVE TO LET THEM DEVELOP.

Yeah you could be right. It might be the end of the road for Thrash. But I'm not sure why Washington hasn't stuck on with anyone and had a big season catching the football. I remember he was a stud coming out of Tenn.

we should trade Moss, get a 2nd or 3rd for him next year, and let all the young and up coming WR, play now, the best way is to find out which one, really wants to be #1

yeah Washington probably has a real good shot to make this team. He has some ability and most importantly he is a quality teams player. It'll probably end up Thomas,Kelly,Moss, Randle El,Washington most game days.

both are nice signings.....Washington will hopefully replace Thrash. Hackett cant really replace Thrash because he doesn't play special teams. He is nice insurance though if we have an injury to the top 4 WR's, esp. with Kelly having another surgery. Even though Hackett can't stay healthy either, at least he can help the youngins learn the system if nothing else....

Being Kelly is not ready to go and Thomas has a hammy issue from yesterday, even though it doesn't appear to be much, it is the same problem hammy from last season. They will have plenty of time to develop, as it appears.

We have an old/weak WR core to say the least. And two unproven rookies, and yes I hope one of these guys can step up and be a #1 or #2 and challenge Santana but that remains to be seen.

Both these guys are veteran WR's in this league, have good size and know how to play the game, and are being signed for a reason. If Hackett stays healthy he is very familiar with this offensive scheme and could be a big asset. I like both these moves, they are needed.

welcome to the site...but this comment makes no sense at all...trade Moss for a future 3rd just to force the Skins to play the young guys?

Moss it the only deep threat the opposing defenses need to game plan around.

The NFC east would be laughing their butts off if we did this...dont worry...it wont happen.

The reality is we will get lucky if one of the rookies stick...so that would leave Moss ARE...the successful rookie...then WR depth...I highly doubt both rookies start...and if they do...it wont be until next year at the soonest.
So do we need Moss...absolutely...almost as much as we need portis...and probably more than we need Cooley.

It sounds like you guys think we already signed both guys...is this true?

The first post says that Hackett is likely to sign pending a physical....if he does, then why would Washington sign with the Skins vs the Ravens....I wouldn't.

re: Skins look to improve WR-Sign Roydell Williams (could add Hackett)

Hopefully I'm being overly pessimistic here but Kelly's knee at this point sounds FUBAR...and he hasn't been able to put in the time building chemistry/timing w/ JC as Thomas has. That said I could see Kelly inactive early in the season (hopefully not too long) and our WR corp look like: Moss, DT, ARL, Hacket, Washinton. Losing Thrash will help cap space a bit too so I'd say he's gone. Hopefully Kelly can get back in later...but I really don't expect anything from him this season at all...can you imagine how his knee will flare up at game speed and taking hits.

The article says that Hackett will sign today and Washington may sign after a tryout with the Ravens this week.

Goodbye James Thrash...I've enjoyed your special teams contributions but we need to get more out of our receivers.
