Thoughts on Potential Draft Trade With Cleveland!!!

It was reported by Washington POst Live and by a few of my reporter buddies at the Verizon Center, that the Redskins are in talks with Cleveland for the 3rd overall pick.

So far the deal is that the Redskins will trade their 6th overall, Ladell Betts, and a 6th rounder(the one we got from the Bears) in exchange for the 3rd overall and a 3rd round draft pick.

One of the reasons is that Gibbs & D. Snyder are both enamored with the skills, physical attributes, work ethic, and upside of one Calvin Johnson!

He has been projected to go as high as #1 overall to Oakland, but not to fall farther than #4 to Tampa Bay. So essentially, we would be leap-frogging the team that is reported to be taking him.

THoughts? Comments?

I'd rather keep Betts and trade down from #6, get a third round pick and still be high enough to get one of the top DLinemen. I guess that trade would make sense (maybe more for Cleveland than the Skins) but it would at least make sense. Only as a draft day deal, though, because you'd have to make sure Johnson was still on the board. Sorry for blasting you on the other thread about the Cleveland and 3rd comment before knowing what you were talking about.

trade down to where and to whom? That assertion is compleltly ambiguous, and this is under the assumption that the top d-lineman will be available!

They will be going fast in the first 15 picks. So past in the first 15 picks Adams, Anderson, Okoye, Branch, and Carriker are all poised to be gone!

I hear everyone, but I WILL BE NAMING NAMES of the warpath faithful who will bicker and complain about how many people we could have had after our first pick!!

Im telling you now it will suck, and I WILL be here to remind all of you if you do in fact complain or start any forums thereafter!!!

Re: Thoughts on Potential Draft Trade With Cleveland!!!

It's hard to call successful PA if other teams don't respect your passing game or when they don't get burned for biting on the run, so I don't agree with the thinking that WR's impact so few of your offensive plays. However, the KC offense that keeps getting referred to was an Al Saunders offense in large part, and they went for 2 rb's over having killer WR's. I'm sure we would all be happy if our offense could come close to matching the production of Saunders' KC offenses. I suppose his thinking and JG's thinking will ultimately determine whether or not a Betts and our pick for CJ would benefit the team or not. I would honestly not complain with any of our potential moves if we get to see a better product on the field and win some freaking games. Time is running out on Gibbs II and all we want is to see him and the team do well.

The difference between what Kansas City had under Saunders and what we had last year was 100% in the blocking. Our offensive line may be the best in our division, but Kansas City had a dominant blocking TE, and the best OL in football. They didn't even have a gamebreaker like Santana Moss, but were so consistent that it didn't even matter.

If we want to improve our offense, THAT is the blueprint to follow. Improve the OL even more.

The only other option is to leave the offense as is, accept the fact that we won't ever make it into the top 3-5 offensively, and try to build up the defense into a playoff caliber one by pouring all of our resources into it.

Re: Thoughts on Potential Draft Trade With Cleveland!!!

Seems like a pretty good deal. Granted we trade to go up, we do get an extra first day pick in the 3rd round, and get a ultra-talented receiver(think posse 2007 Moss, Randle El, and C Johnson), we still have the ability to trade that pick the day of the draft!

If J Russell falls, and C Johnson goes 1st, we can use that position to listen to trade offers from teams trying to get him or Brady Quinn. The pick becomes more valuable as draft day approaches.

The 3rd overall pick is good deal for us. As is goes so far, we pick up CJ with the 3rd overall, and then have our own less-babyfied-playmaking-Randy Moss-type to accelerate the development of Jason Campbell. Then we can still use the first day pick in the 3rd round to get help elsewhere(DE, DT, or DB).

Let the bashing begin!!!

Thumbs up Re: Thoughts on Potential Draft Trade With Cleveland!!!

If the Redskins were going to do this, we'd have to be sure that either the Raiders and Lions weren't going to pick Johnson first. The Lions are known for drafting wide receivers with their first picks (Charles Rogers, Mike Williams) and the Raiders are rumored to trade Randy Moss and try to replace him with Calvin Johnson. Johnson is the best overall player in the draft and those two teams at the top will definitely consider the possibility of drafting him.

Nevertheless, this sounds like a good proposal to me since the Redskins are pretty tiny at wide receiver. This would give Campbell a great possession receiver to bail him out. Just think how many weapons he would have: Moss, Johnson, Randle El, Lloyd, and Cooley.

Although, whatever the outcome of the draft is and whoever the Redskins put on the field, I'm still going to spend my money to watch them lol.

Re: Thoughts on Potential Draft Trade With Cleveland!!!

The guy will be phenomenal, unfortunatly we have spent a lot of money on WR's that are not half as good as CJ, I couldn't fault them for going after a bonified game changer like CJ. I believe in drafting the best talent, not need.

I still think with all the holes we have we need to trade down a couple of times, if Gibbs believes what he say's about all the talent being late in the first and in the 2nd rd then he should be dealing down come draft day.

this type of trade will be done on draft day when the browns are on the clock and if calvin johnson is still there.

Re: Thoughts on Potential Draft Trade With Cleveland!!!

these are all rumors. we do not need another receiver. the skins front office is doing a wonderful job pretending they want everyone. i think the skins will trade down come draft day

HORRIBLE TRADE PERIOD! We need to keep Betts, he is signed for 5 years for small contract and it is proven you need two RB's to win in this league.

Now I would love to C.J. don't get me wrong, but why not just throw in a second rounder next year? That way we have Betts, Portis, Cooley, Moss, ARE, and C.J. That is a offsense with Depth.

In Additon like someone said, this can only be a draft day trade if C.J. is there.
