Even though youth would be my preference RT carries such a high priority that I would still consider quality starters who are older. RT for me is not a position where I would take a wait see approach, its a 'no fail' mission to upgrade.

Targets:

Bryan Bulaga
Derek Newton
King Dunlap
Ryan Harrris (who was for a song last offseason)
Michael Roos

Next position would be FS

Again, merely league average production from the FS would be a benefit to the defense. But we don't have anyone of the roster and expecting a production from a rookie draft pick is asking a lot.

Targets-
Devin McCourty
Da'Norris Searcy
Tashaun Gipson
Will Hill (only makes the list because we're desparate, otherwise I wouldn't have the knucklehead on the list)
Chris Clemons

DL-
We need youth along the DL and instead of signing/re-signing some rather middling players Bowen/Jenkins. I would target:

Stephen Paea

FA/Draft offseason wants:
RT, FS, SS, NB, DL-Pass rusher, OG, TE
this is a fan site. i'd appreciate if you stopped making sense and spoke more irrationally in all future posts. thank you for your cooperation.

Re: 2015 Free Agents

seriously though, RT and FS are things that we really do need now. no need to break the bank, just get someone competent in here.

Re: 2015 Free Agents

FS is the one position where I wouldn't mind signing a legit starter level FA. Having a competent guy back there would go a long ways in helping out our pass rush. Also think a good starter would help Amerson and Breeland develop more than what Clark brought.

Re: 2015 Free Agents

What if we moved Amerson to FS - he has played the position before, it is not new to him. His inconsistencies in coverage will be less visible at FS.

Then, instead of signing a FS, we sign a good-quality corner.

3. no 3 corner (basically what tracy porter was supposed to be for us last year)

after that, hopefully we selectively pick and choose for depth at every position. i dont think you can start and draft a FS unless he is our no 5 pick. Position is too important to not address and i dont trust a rookie at that spot.
I keep hearing free safety listed, I think that Phillip Thomas was more than servicable at strong safety to end the season and is a more natural FS so they will move him. Remember he has been hurt so hopefully not only will we have a real coach that can coach him up, but then we are only looking for a SS that is easier to find.

Re: 2015 Free Agents

I've never been a fan of free agency cause it doesn't work. Free agency is like buying a used car. It ran well before you got it, then when you buy it, it doesn't perform like it did in the past. I hope SM stays real quiet this year. Maybe add a piece here and there. This needs to be a year of rebuilding and getting as many young guys on the field as possible. Going to be hard for him to do with Allen and Snyder in the building. Those two clowns love to win the offseason.

I was not impressed with Thomas at all. He looked real slow and got lost in coverage. Maybe he improves next year.

SS

i like Merriweather as our SS at 1 mil per (injuries, suspensions aside).

I think he and breeland are the only 2 starters for us that would start for another NFL team.

FS

we all hoped thomas would over-perform as a late round pick and possibly earn a starting role, at the least be a solid depth guy.

i would not rely on thomas going into next year as a starter.

imo he needs a strong and healthy camp to even make the roster.

FS is too important for defenses nowadays to rely on an unreliable late round draft pick. poor FS play killed us this past year w clark. FS is like the LT on offense. Its an anchor that effects all parts around it.

hutch - you should post more my friend

Re: 2015 Free Agents

merriweather has only played in 50% of games since he's been here. that's just not reliable enough. if he's cheap he's worth keeping, but you can't depend on him for 16 games.

Re: 2015 Free Agents

My new GM is an advocate of building through the draft.
"Why hire guys that are not familiar with your system, injury issues, and may have other habits that we don't like. Let's bring in our own guys through the draft and teach them what we want and pay them to keep them. Free Agency is a tool available that we may also use when it makes sense" --Scott McC....> <
Until he proves this will not work, I am ALL in with this philosophy. Been waiting years to hear it. HTTR......
Look how well the FA philosophy has served us in the past...

Re: 2015 Free Agents

Yeah its time to build up this team and we do it by the draft no more FA BS. Yeah we can go get a couple starters in FA but I want all our picks. Trade cousins for a 5 if we can also. No sense in having him and rg3

Re: 2015 Free Agents

The reality of the NFL is that we will need to dabble in Free Agency. If you listened to Scot, he drafts based on BPA, not Need.

That means, to fill Needs, we'll have to use Free Agency.

Also, we have several current roster members (at least 11) who will be UFA's:
Orakpo, Polumbus, Helu, J Jenkins, Meriweather, Hankerson, Paul, Moss, McCoy, Clark & Biggers to name a few.

So, we draft BPA and hope that we get all of those positions filled? Seriously?

I think it's clear that we will need to have some involvement in Free Agency.
Avoiding Free Agency is as silly as Avoiding draft picks.

Good teams strike a balance....hopefully, we become a good team soon.
