Re: Why dont the Redskins use audibles?
wow glad i clicked on this thread b/c it discusses something that is worth considering and i learned a few things. thanks for the informative posts guys, wish i could contribute but my depth of knowledge on al saunders and audibles was zero before reading this thread.
but i agree, audibles at the line of scrimmage can work well in the NFL, especialy in an offense that everyone is calling predictable but i think campbell needs more time in the NFL (only has 16 starts to date) before he can be trusted to properly and accurately read defenses and call audibles . . . of course audibles could be called from up stairs to campbells headset in his helmet but that may take too long and this offense doesnt need another thing to delay our play calling. questions: so campbell and our receivers have to make the same read for any adjustment/audible from the original playcall? and they have to trust that they make the same read and are on the same page? WOW that is alot of ESP going on there, for this too work it seems you would need the same receivers and quarterback for years so they can gel and get some serious chemistry going on . . . plus football intelligent and dedicated "students of the game" players does rabach still handle the O line audibles/guys to pick up on run and pass plays? im guessing yes . . . more threads should be like this, dissecting and discussing actual redskins football Xs and Os . . go skins! |

Re: Why dont the Redskins use audibles?
We had an audible on that 7 and goal play in the Eagles game which Campbell stuck with the run instaed of using an audible to change it to a pass. So we do use them. How much I'm not sure.

Re: Why dont the Redskins use audibles?
Yeah I'm not sure if that qualifies as a true audible, or if they just give him 2 options in certain situations like that.

Re: Why dont the Redskins use audibles?
Well if you go to the line and switch the called play then I think its an audible. Unlike Peyton he has 3 plays then calls the play after they go to the line which in this case it would not be an audible.

Re: Why dont the Redskins use audibles?
Right, I didn't word that very well, what I wonder if he always has that option, or if he's only allowed to "audible" in certain situations.

I'm not sure. I thought that was a great question so I went and put that down as a question for Tony and maybe he can give us some insight.

In all seriousness, I assume that we'll start to see JC getting the leeway to audible as the staff grows more comfortable with him.

Re: Why dont the Redskins use audibles?
I heard that on the 3rd and 7 draw, Gibbs gave Campbell the freedom to audible to a pass, but with Philly showing blitz before the snap, Campbell stuck with the call. Philly dropped the linebackers, effectively killing any chance Portis had to score. That said, I like the fact that Campbell was at least given a chance to change the play. Allowing him to run the no huddle against Philly also demonstrates growing confidence that the coaches have in him.

Re: Why dont the Redskins use audibles?
What's interesting, beyond the audible at the goal line, was the no-huddle where JC really had more control. Seems like Gibbs/Saunders and co are aware that giving JC more freedom is a good thing. It's like they've been reading our posts!

Re: Why dont the Redskins use audibles?
Yes, the 3rd down and 7 was an audible, either a draw or a pass. JC saw the coverage and called the run. So..i would think that would qualify.

Re: Why dont the Redskins use audibles?
If that's the case then absolutely, that's on jc. No matter who calls it I never want to see another draw play. I know that sometimes they go for big gains but it seems like 99/100 times they just suck for us.

Draw plays are always big hitters usually because the team is in a spread set, with the def retreating so the rb has some room to run. But a draw in a jumbo package makes absolutley no sense at all. The odds of him getting out of there through all of that traffic are not very good.

Re: Why dont the Redskins use audibles?
Only worse redskins play than a draw is a reverse. It's effective maybe 20% of the time.
