Re: Injuries will create a youth movement opportunity
And there was 1992 the year after winning the SB, the skins had so many injuries all around, that Brian Mitchell was the starting RB in the playoffs. Spanked the Vikings and came a fumble away from beating the 49ers at Candlestick Park. In my opinion that was the best coaching job by Joe Gibbs of his entire career.

Beathard would find players from any source. There is no one good source Gary Clark, Ricky Sanders Kelvin Bryant came from the USFL. How about trade for Jim Lachey for Jay Schroeder? Key players like FA or trades for Dave Butz, NFL MVP Mark Mosley, Earnest Byner, Gerald Riggs, Joe Washington, Jumpy Geathers, Danny Copeland, Brad Edwards, Tim zjohnson and Eric Williams just to name few. But the biggest surprise was Doug Williams superbowl MVP. So 2/3 of our SB winning qb's were not drafted by Redskins (JTheisman and DWilliams) 2/3 of our SB winning Rb's were not drafted by Skins (Riggins and Byner/Riggs). The one that was drafted Timmy Smith? Wow! 2/3 of our famed dynamic receiving trio Monk, Clark and Sanders came from the USFL. Of the "Original" 1982-83 starting Hogs only May and Grimm were drafted. Starke was left over of George Allen class of 1971. That was a lot of good treading water.:cheeky-sm |

Also, I counted UDFAs because we hunted them down first and kept them(i.e Bostic, Jacoby), for the most part. Your counter argument is bunk for another reason. Joey T, Doug Williams, and Ryp WERE NOT ON THE SAME ROSTER...ever. They all counted for a grand total of 1 not-drafted by-the-Redskins player on their respective Super Bowl teams.

And as for the present, having McNabb and Brown flame out in three years while those who grabbed Nate Allen, Taylor Mays, Lamarr Houston, Jared Veldheer(reach, but still), Terrence Cody, and maybe some others. all have hit on guys that will be benefitting their teams 3 years from now and beyond.

Re: Injuries will create a youth movement opportunity
Nor did I ever state that the quality of drafted players was NATURALLY SUPERIOR TO the externally obtained players. It's just that these sorts of externally obtained had guys around him who were "home-grown". Yeah, the Saints finished their puzzle with Brees, but a good chunk of their OL, RBs, and WRs were all "home-grown" from the draft or UDFA.

Re: Injuries will create a youth movement opportunity
The FA culture was so different when Beathard was acquiring players & when Casserly was in Plan B free agency. The players didn't have much control then, so when they were brought in they typically accepted their role on the team. Unlike some big name FAs these days, like say a dude in B&G that wears 92?
The 91 skins had a lot of plan b free agents on defense, that was a great defense for being built partially out of leftovers. But in our glory years we hit on a lot of draft picks in late rounds & found players at small schools, e.g. Darrell Green. Even picking J. Schroeder was brilliant, the guy was going to play baseball. He comes in after Joe T. has his leg snapped, goes to a pro bowl, loses his touch & then we trade him for arguably the best LT in football. I think most of us agree that in the cap era, you can't build a team from free agency at the expense of draft picks. It doesn't make sense, economically & in terms of football. |

Re: Injuries will create a youth movement opportunity
What happened to the topic of this thread???
Anyways, I am glad to see James Davis being brought up from the practice squad. I remember watching him play while at Clemson and I really think he has some real talent and could make a huge impact the remainder of the season. With him and Keiland, we just may finally get a running game going. |

Re: Injuries will create a youth movement opportunity
For those wondering 16/22 Super Bowl XVII starters were either draft picks or UDFAs (and I'm including Monk though he didn't play in the SB); 13/22 for SB XXII, and 11/22 for XXVI. This, of course, includes guys drafted after the 7th round, which isn't possible anymore. Saints had 10/22 in their SB win earlier this year. Redskins opened the season with I think 7/22 drafted or UDFA starters. But anyway, I think it's a) a different era and b) there are many ways to build a champion.
Anyhow, back to the topic of this thread. Been some rumors of Selvish Capers being called up but I'm not sure I see that happening. And Ramzee Robinson will be working out with the Skins today and may be signed.

Re: Injuries will create a youth movement opportunity
I, for one, am excited to see what some of our youngsters can do. I believe if we are to be successful on offense, we need to have younger, faster offensive linemen. But, I am excited that Keiland Williams has stepped up and delivered. I'm hoping Torrain can get back into the lineup, as well as Portis. Definitely also eager to see what James Davis can do for us.
Regardless if this team makes the playoffs or not this year, I just want this team to make the most of the next six games and end the season on a high note.

Re: Injuries will create a youth movement opportunity
James Davis was called up and the other roster spot that is currently open, they are looking to fill with a safety. So Capers coming up isn't likely at all now. I personally think Davis is a better option right now then Capers anyways.

Re: Injuries will create a youth movement opportunity
It will all depend on whether they place Rabach on IR, which I'm hearing is a possibility. If they do, they'll probably call up Cook or Capers

Re: Injuries will create a youth movement opportunity
Rabach has a second degree meniscus tear...his play can only get worse. I'd shelf him.
