On Sunday, the first sack, by rookie Anthony Barr, wasn’t a matter of Griffin holding on to the ball too long. He was down in 2.2 seconds. It was a matter of Minnesota overloading a gap inside and running back Roy Helu being unable to slow Barr.

Another time Helu couldn’t stop Chad Greenway on a sack that took 2.8 seconds, although Griffin could have unloaded a short crossing route to tight end Jordan Reed. He might not have picked up a first down on third-and-8, but it would have avoided a fourth-and-18 punt from the Redskins’ 10-yard line.

Interior pressure on second-and-16 on the final drive tested Griffin in the pocket. Saying what he should have done is a lot easier than knowing how to do it in the pocket, and every quarterback runs himself into a sack sometimes. But he tried to step through an area where he had no chance and was sacked.

The Redskins have a group that is not great in protection -- it’s not just the line -- in front of a quarterback who will hold on to the ball longer. It’s a tough mix. Both sides need to help each other.

Offensive coaches need to adjust to our poor o-line/pass protection. Every game, we seem to wait until the 3rd or 4th quarter to throw a screen pass that always goes for a lot of yards. And every time I ask why we wait that long to do such pass.
