Free Kick/Kick Off

Per the WP, the coaches took credit for screwing that up:

Gibbs said the Redskins should not have sent Derrick Frost out to punt from the 5-yard line Sunday after penalties pushed back a kickoff. The team thought it could take a free kick, but was wrong.

You can use a punter (punt or the obsolete dropkick) for a free kick AFTER A SAFETY...but not after a penalty or after a TD or FG.

How could the coaches not know this? I know this and I never even played football!

I don't think you can use a tee after a safety though, it must be punted or kicked off with a holder. I think that's the rule...
