Spitting in a guys face isn't as common as you think. I got elbowed and punched a few times in piles, but never had my nuts grabbed (you're an idiot if you're not wearing a cup to begin with), was never bitten (facemasks make that kind of hard), and never spit on.

Trust me, if this kind of stuff went on all the time at the bottom of the pile, players would get caught a lot more often, and called out by other players a lot more often.

I think the difference is in the middle of a scrum, as opposed to just standing face to face with someone. You grab someone's junk in the bottom of a pile while trying to go for the football, ok well that's kind of odd bur par for the course in that situation. You do that while just standing there talking to someone then that's a whole other story.
