Long enrolled at the University of Virginia in 2004. He provided depth on the line, but only played in 6 games after missing five due to an illness. Long ended the season with only five tackles, two for a loss, and a sack. His first career tackle came against North Carolina, while his first tackle for a loss came against Miami. His first career sack came against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.

In 2005, as a sophomore, Long started all the games of the season. Long practiced by being matched up against All-American offensive lineman D'Brickashaw Ferguson in training camp and practice.[2] Long averaged 3.8 tackles per game, leading all Virginia defensive lineman. He totaled 46 tackles, with 10 tackles for a loss and 2 sacks. His 26 quarterback pressues led his team. He also shared the team lead in pass break-ups with Marcus Hamilton with seven. In his first start, Long had seven tackles against Western Michigan. He then had six tackles, two for a loss, and a sack against North Carolina, followed by a three tackle, 10 quarterback pressure day against Georgia Tech and Reggie Ball. In the Music City Bowl against Minnesota, Long had a career-high 9 tackles, one for a loss.[2]

In 2006, Long's junior year, he had his best campaign yet. Long earned second-team all-ACC honors and was voted team captain. While starting all games, Long recorded 57 tackles, 12 for a loss, and 4 sacks. He also had one pass break-up and 21 quarterback pressures. His 4.8 tackles per game was fourth among ACC defensive lineman. Long had a season-high three tackles for a loss against East Carolina, then 10 tackles against Western Michigan. At the team's award banquet, Long earned three awards: Ned McDonald Award for the top defensive player, the Colonel F.C. McCue Award for the most outstanding interior lineman and the Joe Palumbo Award for self-sacrifice, dedication, and enthusiasm. He was also a finalist for the Dudley Award, for the most outstanding player in the state of Virginia and was an All-State selection.

Long entered the 2007 season as a candidate for the Outland Trophy, Bronko Nagurski Trophy, Bednarik Trophy, Lombardi Trophy, and Hendricks Award.

Following his 14-sack performance his senior season, He was selected as a consensus First-team All-American. Long was also voted Team captain for the second year in a row. His 14 sacks were third in the country in sacks with an average of 1.13/g. Long was fourth nationally in tackling by a lineman, averaging 6.3 tackles per game and tied for 10th in the nation in tackles for loss, averaging 1.58/g. Additionally, Long tied for sixth in the country among defensive linemen in pass break ups (PBU) with seven and by adding in his interception, he was tied for fifth in the country among defensive linemen in passes defended (PBU+INTs) with eight.

"You want to talk about a chip off the old block? This is a young man that plays absolutely lights-out football," North Carolina head coach Butch Davis said. "Chris Long has to be one of the premier defensive linemen in the country."

im so sorry my opinion doesn't jive with your man love for Chris Long. nice post. all im saying that if his combine workout wasn't off the charts, no one is talking about him in the first round. we can agree to disagree

They were talking about this guy WAY before the combine...so that's not really a valid argument. He was going to be a top five pick the minute he graduated. If you're trying to make the argument that had his combine performance been mediocre, he would have slid...well, that argument applies to everyone in the draft. I'm not saying we should put this guy's bust in Canton just yet...but to say that he isn't good, or that he's overrated..or to say that he only had THREE good games in college is utterly ridiculous.

see the thread about Bram's blog. In it he says that Cerrato attended Long's pro day & it wasn't "overly impressive" yet picking him 1st overall was a "no brainer." so count us among the teams that would take him if we had the chance.

There are always guys in college sports that seem to have it all, but for whatever reason can't reach that level in the pros. Of course there's a chance that Long might be another mamula, who actually wasn't bad he just didn't live up to his hype.

I wouldn't disagree w/you so much about Long if you offered some specifics, or even if you just said something like, 'my gut tells me he's not gonna be that good.'

Based on all the real evidence though, Long has all the attributes to be a good pro.

hard to argue againts long as the #1 even, let alone as a bust... i think mcfadden will have a rough time if he's playing behind a crappy O line, i don't like a lot of the WRs, including sweed (bleh) and desean jackson (tiny).

there's only 3 DEs i'd really want in the first: golston, long, and harvey.

From what I understand, it's a pretty deep draft for receivers. I don't see why we can't get a quality one in the second or third rounds. Save that first-rounder for a defensive lineman or cornerback.

Sounds like the common thinking among the scouts is that this is a relatively deep class of wr's but w/a lot of parity & no real 'can't miss' guy like CJ last year. Seems everybody has an issue; Desean Jackson's size, Sweed's wrist injury, etc.

that said, I would agree that we can probably get good value in the 2nd or 3rd rounds. It would be sweet if we could trade down & get more picks. Smootsmack mentioned in another thread that Atl. might want to do that w/their 2nd round picks as they have 2 or 3 of them, assuming the Hall deal goes through.

I'm on that same boat with ya. I really hope someone falls to us at 21 that the Atlanta Falcons will want to trade back into the 1st@21 and hopefully we can pick up a couple of them good picks they have.

I hope we pick the best defensive player available in the 1st (unless is Albert)
and If we trade our 1st, hopefully we will receive a high 2nd and I would love to take a chance on Hardy with a 2nd round pick.

My ideal Sitation would look like this:

Round 1[21] - Traded down for a high 2nd and a 3rd/4th OR Best Defensive Player Available.(Unless its Albert)

In all seriousness I would be one of the people that disagree with Blache (obviously). So with that said I would much rather have a guy like Kenny Phillips instead of a guy like DRC, who I'll admit is tempting. However I'd rather have two safetys knocking the crap out of people coming over the middle and providing support on the deep ball then two corners of the same caliber. I guess from my perspective I just see safetys more involved throughout the course of a game.

I'd also argue that guys like Polomalu, Reed, and Bob Sanders have had a bigger impact on the game then Champ Bailey, Chris McAlister, Rasheen Mathis, and Nate Clements. Especially considering that we live in an a time where corners aren't allowed to be nearly as physical as they were, say 10 years ago.

However its obvious that the beliefs of the Defensive Coordinator, who was promised a good amount of power will have a pretty loud voice on draft day when it comes to drafting defensive players and if that voice calls for the team to take a corner on draft day, then so be it.
