Nope, pay him to ride the pine and call it a bad business decision. If he doesn't give the requisite level of effort, fine him for everything and anything you can, call him out at meetings & in the press (avoiding slander of course), make his professional life as miserable as you legally can. All the while saying, smiling and telling him daily "hope you're enjoying your money. Now, go sit on the pine."

Yeah, there was a good quote in one of these articles that said something like, "Make him sit on the bench and become everything he doesn't want to be: unproductive and forgotten." Beautiful.
