Re: its embarrassing to him --fred davis-- (blocking)
I want Gtripp's input, but I recall reading in his Offensive reviews early in the season that Davis was a good blocker (or perhaps he was just saying that he's heaps better than Yoder?).

Re: its embarrassing to him --fred davis-- (blocking)
he is a pass catching TE, not a blocking one. he is built more like a Gates, Gonzalez. Yes he needs to improve his blocking, but he is what he is. We knew that when we drafted him, I know since our team isnt playing well and not winning we see all the flaws in everybody.

When or if we improve our o-line we will be able to see both Cooley & Davis run routes on the field together. I think we could be a dangerous team with them on the field together without them blocking.

Re: its embarrassing to him --fred davis-- (blocking)
Block well enough and often enough that you can sell once and a while he's staying in, otherwise work the seam and score TDs, that's why we're all excited about Fred Davis. It's great to hear he wants to be an all around player and that he's working hard. I feel like he got a bit of a bad rap because of his alarm clock issue in his first training camp. Davis seems like a good player. How's his arm? We have room for a QB!
If you really are his brother, can you see about having him grow his hair out and dye it the same as Cooley's? I bet Cooley and Yoder would even help out!

I say we throw the ball Davis' way and let him end up with 54 catches for the year. Then package him and Portis for three picks in the first two rounds.

I really don't understand the concept of dealing young players for picks. I mean wouldn't common sense tell you to deal a veteran and keep your young players?

Re: its embarrassing to him --fred davis-- (blocking)
Davis has done fine at blocking in the past, but the attention to detail to be successful at blocking when you are a package player is completely different from doing it when you are THE guy. I've seen his raw blocking skills on tape, but he has to prove he can do it simultaneously to being a starting TE.
It's why TE is probably the most difficult position to play outside of QB on the offense. Your block is every bit as critical as the guys who play the OL and do it every play, but despite how important blocking is, you don't get the big bucks to lay dudes out. Elite TEs are hard to find.

Re: its embarrassing to him --fred davis-- (blocking)
Our offense is as desperate for playmakers as it is for blocking. Fred Davis has insane talent as a catch and run TE. Cooley is one of my favorite players, but I'll say right now Davis' ability/athleticism exceed Cooley's. He needs to work on his skills...it's an absolute shame he didn't get time w/ Al Saunders (another retarded irony of Snyder's decision to fire one of the best TE offensive coordinators in football and immediately draft the best college TE). Anyway, I say let Davis do what he can do best and figure out how to scheme the damn offense so he's not forced to stay in and block too much. Jones should help...and Buges needs to whip this sorry bunch into shape yesterday!

Re: its embarrassing to him --fred davis-- (blocking)
While the blocking is still his biggest problem, I took notice of the play where Davis bulled through two tacklers to gain 3-4 yards after contact for a first down. That is exactly what we want to see, as opposed to jumping and getting tripped up short of first down yardage, which had been his signature move in his limited opportunities with the ball.

Re: its embarrassing to him --fred davis-- (blocking)
Fred Davis is never going to be a great blocker. There's no point in even scheming that. Send him into the flat as as a safety valve. At least he would have a chance to do some good. If you're going to have a TE pass protect, give Lorenzo Alexander a number in the 80s and call him a TE.
Amd Matty is right. The jumping in the air thing would be laughable at this point if it weren't so stupid. I wonder how much these guys really work on pass blocking. Sellers is awful at it. Ditto Betts. Portis is the only respectable one and he's never in on 3rd down.
