That's what I was thinking. Besides, we didn't do anything that others hadn't already done. The fact that we did it in-season made it seem worse to some folks.

The Rooney Rule is obviously not working as it should, though. Changes are needed.

The Rooney Rule is working exactly as it was intended. Clubs have to interview a minority candidate...that's it. What do you want an NFL team to have to hire a minority candidate? That is un American, you should be able to hire whoever you want to. They are already being told to interview candidates that wouldn't warrant serious consideration otherwise. I don't mind the rule, but don't say that it's not working just because these candidates rarely get chosen over more qualified peers.

I kind of think the Rooney Rule is a joke. I mean, if a team already has a candidate in mind, they're just going to grab the closest black person they can, throw an interview at them and then hire the the other person.

What was wrong with the NFL before the Rooney Rule was instated anyway?

The NFL before the Rooney was GREAT, but by virtue of the low number (or non-existent) of black coaches in a pre-dominantly black sport....it was not as great for.....all.
While I agree with you that if you have your guy already, you are probably are going to hire him. AND I believe you should be able to so. IN that scenario, I think it is ineffective for THAT position.
I think it has some merit as at least you are gaining interview skills and hopefully your name is being passed around as a "possible" candidate. Sooo, the NEXT int...maybe you get a real shot.

I might be confusing names/teams, but I think it was Tomlin in Pittsburgh who was hired as a result of the Rooney Rule -- even though Pittsburgh had another candidate in mind (Wisenhunt, I believe).

Re: Mora out in Seattle, Pete Carroll in

You figure coaches until recently were typically 20-40 years older than their players, so it makes sense that there were a lot more white head coaches. Even if you factor in a lot of black players in the 70s and on it takes awhile to come from playing to coaching... or whatever other coaching that they were doing at the time. I think that the number of black coaches we have now isn't really impacted by the rule, just the increase in available candidates. The number of black head coaches is quite higher than the actual demographics of the population, not as far as players, but not every player can be a coach, not every player wants to be a coach, not every coach was a player at a high level, etc

I'm not positive...but I think I heard that USC is going to go after Jeff Fisher.

I've heard the same thing. I think he's due a lot of money the last 2 years of his contract in Tennesse though. Seems like I heard something like that.

USC would be smart to get a big name head coach to keep their recruiting momentum going. Fisher - - or even Del Rio (another USC grad) - - might be just the right pick.

HOW-EVAH, the USC football coach has to work for Mike Garrett as the AD. Let's just say that Garrett's reputation as a "supervisor" is less than pristine and leave it at that.

From what I've heard, Del Rio would be more interested in USC than USC would be in him.

Thankfully, Rich McKay may be replacing Garrett (who basically sacrificed our hoops program this year to assuage football penalties... which are probably coming down hard anyway).

Latest rumor is that Del Rio is the man- bringing Kennedy Pola along with him. Possibly Norm Chow returning too. I think we'd need to chase Orgeron to complete the staff.

Thought that I read something saying Chow was staying at UCLA and it was just a rehash of earlier rumors.

well there's no way Chow's coming back now... Lane Kiffen is his mortal enemy. LK bounces around faster than Snooki on Jersey Shore.
