Cars in the 30's had a lot thicker metal than 21st century ones and bullets went right through the doors. No formal training but I shoot crap all the time right out in the back yard. Next time someone tells you hiding behind a car door is safe tell them to stand behind one while you shoot at it.

A car door is more than just sheet metal. There are rods, levers, and other metal within it. The sheet metal will most likely stop lower powered guns, but certainly not the higher powered ones. That said, those doors will still slow those bullets down, and it'll mean a lot if those officers are wearing bullet proof vests (as they should be). In the end, some protection is better than none.
