Why are we trying to sign so many strong safeties when we need a FS?

Check out this article about McClain. I would love for us to steal him from the Cowboys. He was the heart of that no name defense they had.

Wasn't signing Culliver risky enough for you?

Nope, lol... I hold results on the NFL field in high regard and I see these players as a fit (on a one year deal). At some point you have to forgive them for mistakes. I feel that we need to fill as many holes on the team as possible in free agency so that the players that we draft can have the opportunity to develop into starting roles. That is why I love the pot-roast deal. If he proves to be his worth we give him a long term deal next year, If we draft a guy like Shelton the pressure will not be on him to be the savior.

Re: Who should we go for in Free Agency?

He nominally backed up both spots but, yes, he is most likely a strong safety.

His "meeting" is today. Yesterday was a meet and greet dinner. He had the fish.

Re: Who should we go for in Free Agency?

More on my guy Jeron (from January 29, 2015):

Quote:
Jeron Johnson, S, Seattle Seahawks; Age: 26.
The hard-hitting safety was signed by the Seahawks as an undrafted free agent in 2011, and he has been the team's top backup at the position in the time since. Multiple league sources said at least one NFC team tried to trade for him during the past few seasons, so even as a backup, Johnson has drawn the watchful eye of other clubs. That's a good sign for his market as a free agent, should he become available.
Roy Helu among free-agent sleepers this offseason - NFL - ESPN

I admit it; I want this guy bad. In addition to his potential, he appears to be a good character guy. Given the buzz he generated in advance of the market opening, and the ability he has flashed in very limited playing time, I think that he is likely (1) going to turn into a real steal for somebody; (2) to be an upgrade over anybody currently on our roster; and (3) to be more than another "Just A Guy" safety (maybe not all-pro or regular pro-bowler but pretty much the next tier down from that). Finally, he makes drafting Langdon much less of a priority (both are SS with some FS ability).

Obviously, given his lack of playing time, all of this is speculation and counting on him to be all of the above is risky. At the same time, it is speculation consistent with a lot of other folks who have better info than any of us and a risk that more than one or two teams seem willing to take.

Regardless, I am betting he doesn't sign today. Scot McC will make him a solid, competitive offer but nothing outrageous. If the buzz on him is real, Jax has the resources to outbid us and probably will if his former coach Gus Brady (former Seattle DC, now Jax HC) really wants him. I don't know the status of Jax's DB's - Anyone know if they are in need?

As I said, based on his alleged potential and the going rate for safeties, a reasonable contract for this guy would probably be in the 2.5-3.0M range but I can see teams going higher. Ultimately, in Scot I trust.

Jacksonville just drafted Johnathan Cyprien to be their SS I'm 2013, if they are ready to give up on him I don't know, but they do have him and Josh Evans as their safeties. Here Johnson is almost guaranteed a starter spot, there he would have to earn it more.

Johnson has signed. Seems like a more than solid signing. Plus he plays teams.

Re: Who should we go for in Free Agency?

i never heard of Jeron Johnson. Appears like he has some FO thinking he could be a decent starter if given the chance.

Not that this has been our MO up to this point, but i hope we dont fall in love with the idea of him and give him anything more than a few mil per.

Does anyone know the sticker price? does this young backup want 4+ mil per? that would be crazy considering we could have had Mike Mitchell for 5 mil per last year.

Looking at last years free agent FS compared to this offseason, we really screwed up a good opportunity to add a decent FS last year for reasonable money.
