Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread

I'd rather overpay him after 1 more good season.

Redskins GM won't sign Cousins at expense of other good, young players

This is interesting

Quote:
Washington Redskins general manager Scot McCloughan says he wants to re-sign quarterback Kirk Cousins to a long-term extension, but not if it means he can't afford to pay the team's young prospects.

"(You've) got to step back and say 'Okay, who do we have next year? (Are) there three to five to seven guys that we want to extend prior to the last year of their deal, or do we want to go after one and know we’re going to lose three or four next year?" McCoughan replied to a question about Cousins on SiriusXM Bleacher Report Radio, according to Dan Steinberg of The Washington Post.

"So it’s a fine line, and like I said, it’s tough, but that’s why we do this," McCloughan continued. "It’s the market. The NFL’s a phenomenal, phenomenal entity, and the money’s incredible. But the way I look at it is I want Kirk in a long-term deal, no doubt about it, but also I’m not gonna put our franchise in a situation where we’re gonna lose three or four younger guys that I think are gonna be good football players for one guy. I won’t do it. You know, that’s just how it is.

"And the quarterback position’s very very important, but you know what, so is every other position," McCloughan added. “We need football players. We need multiple football players, not one."

McC street cred in the lockerroom just went up a notch(not that he really needed anymore). This is why when McC's down on the field before and after the game, players are coming up to this guy smiling, hugging, etc. They respect this guy and want to play for him.

He building a TEAM folks...Its all about TEAM. Not 1 player.

Call me negative Nancy, but to me, that sure sounds like he knows they are getting Cousins on a one year deal, and then he will walk while they build the rest of the team. Otherwise, he would have never made that statement about not being able to keep the young guys. My guess is they figure that if they get all the pieces around the QB, they could make do with any scrub / average Quarterback that they wouldn't have to break the bank for.

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread

Earlier this offseason, McCloughan said, "Kirk will be here a long time. ... If it's not done by July 15, don't worry, we'll get something figured out."

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread

This is an audition year for Kirk. We know that already. This dilemma of who to pay will be much clearer in several months.

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/...-the-redskins/

Article seems to hint that Redskins are committed to finding someone who can do what Cousins does for cheap money.

Or there's this gem:
Kirk Cousins found out what the Redskins thought of his value: Not much - Washington Times

They bring up the situation of how much Cousins reminds Mr. Snyder of Mike Shanahan. Mention over and over again how Dan Snyder refused to have RG3 benched, and even today is probably not very rosy over the fact that his guy is gone an Cousins is still here.

And last:

Scot McCloughan to Kirk Cousins: 'It’s a team sport, it’s not an individual sport' | CSN Mid-Atlantic

Scott M is saying flat out he wants to give Cousins the money but they can't because if they do they cannot keep their younger players.

2016 is a one and done for Captain Kirk. 2017 he will be somewhere that wants him and appreciates him. That doesn't seem to be here at the moment....

'Cause you know, it's good negotiating tactics to say, "Dude, we cannot survive without you. You are irreplaceable."

He puts up numbers again, he is not going anywhere and he gets paid. Simple as that.

I doubt they figure that.
Nobody wins championships with scrub QBs.
