Re: Wide Reciever Screen
When (ahem) Spurrier ran it with (ahem) Coles we always seemed to get positive yardage out of it. At least most of the time. The new design seems a little feast or faminish. Anyone understand why this is? Or is just being executed less properly?

Re: Wide Reciever Screen
The WR screen is not a play designed to pick up huge chunks of yardage.
It's basically an extended handoff designed to pick up 3, 4, or 5 yards. It also draws a defense in and will make a defense that is playing soft more honest, with the idea of hitting them over the top at some point. It's a staple in a lot of team's playbooks. |

Re: Wide Reciever Screen
I will admit that I hated the WR Screen. It never seem to work out right, but illregardless of the blocks, I see it as a play designed for your WR to beat their CB one-on-one. Gardner and Coles and Thrash, could never get it to work last year, and most of the time it doesn't work, but I think Brunell could audible to it with Moss, when the CB is playing off, and get 4-5 yards or more everytime! Moss can beat you one-on-one. I think the bottom line is you have to have a "playmaker" for it to shine as a play.

Re: Wide Reciever Screen
Watching Santana Moss blaze past defenders was the prettiest sight since he toasted Roy Williams of the Cowgirls. I can't remember getting that excited by one play in a long time. The Brunnel to Moss connection is wonderful. I really like the Brunnel to Cooley connection also. If only Patten or Thrash would step up.

Re: Wide Reciever Screen
I still hate the wide receiver screen. The reason it blows up so often with us before is because teams were playing so close to the line that the defense was playing so tight to the line. It is still feast or famine, I don't mind one or two a game but it can also blow up on you, witness Peerless Price and his -1 yards receiving vs the Skins.
I'd like to see more attempts to get Portis out in space, use him more like Ladanian Tomlinson instead of John Riggins. Why are we not swinging more passes to CP, he should be the one dominating our offense and not Brunell. There's no excuse as to why Portis hasn't reached the end zone this year, and more than turnovers, more than cutting down the wideout screens, and more than even playing LaVar we've got to figure out how to get Portis into the end zone. Once we do, then we'll have a complete offense and be a threat to make the playoffs. Brunell can only carry us for so long, we've got to start riding Portis if we want to be a playoff team. |

Re: Wide Reciever Screen
I think the playcalling should be a bit more aggressive especially when the ball is over the 50 yard line. Gibbs gets a little conservative in the redzone and it should change this week. We approach this game like this is the Joe Montana 49ers and not sleep on this team. We saw what they did to Dallas in the first quarter. And with our offense struggling to score, we don't need to play catch-up all game. I hope to see the ball pitched out more to Portis because there is no daylight in the middle of the field. I know they have to see this obvious point on the films week after week.
