It could be that the front office is also trying to assemble the rest of the coaching staff for the new DC, and they're also trying to find guys who would fit best with the philosophy and schemes that the new DC is going to implement. While, normally, I would assume you'd want the coordinator to bring in his own coaching staff, I suppose with Jay Gruden feeling like this is a do or die year, he wants the best coaching staff assembled, not a buddy system hire.

Yes, often these interviews are more for information gathering. Whether it's the team wanting an outsiders perspective and opinion on their talent and needs, or the team wants more info on another coach they have a more serious eye on. Or it could even be an agent asking a GM for a favor to keep his client's name out there. It never hurts to sit down with someone.
