Btw I think he does, and I think they'll get a long term deal done

But this year, Kirk actually doesn't have that much leverage. Sure, he could sign another deal and make $24M guaranteed this year, which means he's gotten $44M in two years. BUT, what if he gets hurt midway through the season? Or, what if he struggles because the Redskins let both Pierre Garcon and DeSean Jackson go, and Doctson turns out to be a bust? Suddenly his stock decreases. Sure, he could still wind up signing a long term deal somewhere else, but it might not be worth as much as he could get this year.

You're assumption is that Cousins would continue an upward trajectory - which of course we all want to see happen - but it's a big assumption. I would rather take $22M/year for the next 5 years and have about $60M guaranteed as opposed to a sure $24M this year with the hope of signing a gigantic contract next year. It might happen and Kirk doesn't seem afraid to bet on himself again, but it isn't in his best interest. Because there is a lot of pressure on the Redskins to make the playoffs and win a playoff game this year. Which means there is a lot of pressure on Cousins. If the Redskins miss the playoffs again this year, I think Cousins' stock falls and I think he could possibly wind up losing money in the long run by playing hard ball with the negotiations.

On the flip side, I think if the Redskins are willing to give him close to what he wants, there's no reason why Cousins shouldn't take it. For Pete's sake, I would take $5M a year and live the best life ever. When you start to talk about $22M verses $24M, there isn't a lot of difference. You're still set for life.

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread

For a team that needs a QB, the success he's already had will be enough to convince them he can be a franchise guy even if he has a down year. Look what Osweiler got for half a year of starting, and he didnt even play as well as Kirk has over two full seasons. He'll get a massive contract no matter what, especially since the cap will keep going up next year

Injury is a possibility, but I don't think he's ever missed a game due to one. Thats a bet he'd be willing to take

Kirk has ALL the leverage. The Skins are a little toddler holding out a doggy treat to a Great Dane but he's already standing over a box of them. They can hope he plays nice and eats the treat out of their hand, but if he doesnt want to play along he'll just take the box and walk away

If he's tagged this year he will definitely hold all the cards next year. Now not so much.

But follow that further back. If Kirk/McCartney decide not to negotiate a long term deal, the Skins "have" to tag him

Right, therefore he doesn't have much control over where he plays this year. Next year he moves into the drivers seat.

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread

I think we disagree on what Kirk wants? Imo if they offer him what he's looking for in a long term deal, he'll say great, they want me here and they're paying me enough, and he'll sign. But if they tag him, he'll gladly take 24 million guaranteed, which is probably more than what he'd get in the first year of a long term deal anyway, and start thinking about how much he'll get next year in the open market. In my mind he's fine with either scenario

I honestly think the wait is more for dramatic effect than anything else. I have a feeling if the 'skins truly want Cousins here, they're going to sign him to a long term contract. If there's any doubt, they'll sign him to the non-exclusive tag which means they're going to either retain his services for one more year, or they're going to get something for him if he leaves. The reports from Jason Reid about Cousins not wanting to be here is probably just bogus info to try and sabotage any upper hand the team might have in negotiation. Probably came from either Cousins' agent (without Cousins' consent) or the janitor.

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread

It seems to me that we have differing definitions of what "in the drivers seat" means. When I speak of Kirk being in the drivers seat, I'm talking solely about how much money Kirk can demand and get, one way or another, now or in the future. It looks like the worst case for Kirk in 2017 is $19M fully guaranteed on a non-exclusive tag contract with the Redskins. That would mean that Kirk will have been paid $39M over two years, fully guaranteed, and then be a Free Agent once again at the end of the 2017 season. If I could get that, I wouldn't care if had to play in North Korea.

If the Redskins are concerned about paying a big guarantee for Kirk, well, they've already done it unless they sign him long term, trade, or cut him. In short, the Redskins have already lost the deal. Kirk is not only in the driver's seat; he's already arrived at the destination where he'll get another big pay day.
