Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
In terms of him signing, absent the media, I wouldn't care nearly as much, but if we don't sign him, having to hear about it all the fucking time, will be the shits. All 16 games, it would be discussed, and all summer too.

I'd really be surprised if a deal got done at this point. This is the strangest contract negotiation in the history of the NFL.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
If it doesn't get done then I gonna have to listen to all the crap in the media about how the Skins effed it up. It gets old but its the Snyder way. I really cant believe we've finally found a proven QB and we aren't satisfied.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
Skins are damned if they do, damned if they don't get in terms of signing KC. Either they are foolish for not signing him at around his asking price OR they are same old Snyder for overpaying for a player salary regardless of salary cap consequences.

Redskins offered Kirk Cousins $24M in guarantees - NFL.com This year it was reported the Skins offered 20 M per and Cousins wants 24. If the Skins made the 20 per offer and just sat on their hands this entire time like they did last year, I will want Allen's head on a pike. At least sit at the table and try to massage the numbers. Offer him 21 and add on a 5th year, then offer 22 at 4 years, etc .... but at least have some dialogue going. This apparent incompetence is just baffling.

I dont think they are sitting on their hands. I think KCs more positive comments are because the Skins have been ratcheting up their offers and getting closer to his. Thank goodness there are only 5 days left for this dogdoo.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
The way things are presently, here are the options available. Just figure the over/under for each possibility:
1. Deal gets done and signed before July 16th. Drama is over. KC gets his contract. Washington gets their franchise QB. 2. July 16th comes and goes. KC plays under current tag. 2018 gets the Transition Tag. Which means KC can take other offers, but Washington has the option to match. If they match. KC gets his contract. Washington gets their franchise QB. If Washington does not match offer, KC is gone. More importantly, Washington gets NOTHING in compensation. 3. Plays under tag in 2017. Becomes FA in 2018 4. KC gets traded before July 17, 2017 I think if option 1 does not transpire, than KC will not be in Washington next year. But the 2018 draft is supposed to be deep at QB. If option 2 or 3 occurs and KC signs with another team, you need to get a new GM. If KC leaves and the Skins get ZERO in return, that is a criminal act in the NFL and the GM should be shot. |

I saw Vinny Cerrato this morning at the rink. I asked him if we sign Kurt by the deadline and he simply said "no".

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag
I know hindsight is 20/20 and with the current CBO deal the player contracts game has to be played.
But we grade players by their history of what they do on the field. We have do the same to grade our Front Office. When you look back at the history of the Kirk Cousins rookie contract and how little we paid him, including his successful 2015 season. In 2015 Kirk was our starter and he earned a measly $660,000. If he was not the lowest paid starter in the NFL in 2015, we certainly got a great deal. Before the 2015 season instead of signing him to an extention, our FO challenged Cousins and played a BIG poker hand thinking Cousins could be a bluff. Our FO lost that poker hand with the Cousins. Our FO didn't just lose the poker game, they got schooled. Before 2016 season, instead of saying we got a great deal 2015 by paying our starting QB $660,000 last year and got a long term contract done, they made him put his livelihood on the line a second season to play on another one year contract. If Cousins had a serious injury during the 2015 or 2016 season, Cousins could have been another RGIII situation who is currently out of football. Bottom line, Captain Obvious observation, Our FO has not handled this situation well. To think of what we could have signed Cousins to a long term $11M to $12m per/season contract BEFORE the 2015 season is mind blowing. Especially knowing then we knew the NFL Salary cap was going to skyrocket in the next two years. Bad gamble. We knew other teams valued and wanted Cousins. He was not a complete unknown, but we treated him like one. |
