If Goff continues to play like a soft bitch...the Rams would provide the 49ers with the most competition for cousins.

If I was cousins and the skins low balled me 2 consecutive seasons, no way in hell I'd even consider them next year. And I would tell Snyder to eat shit on the way out.

I don't think it's going to matter. He's still got Reed and Crowder he knows very well, and Pryor and Doctson could both be huge in this offense.

I am more frustrated with KC then the team on this one, but ultimately both sides are within the bounds of the CBA, AND, both sides have had legitimate rationales for the course of actions they took. Unless the team's final offer was 22M or less average annual value, then I won't hate on either side.

On to the season... Go Skins!

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

Kicking the can yet again. Frustrating.

I find it interesting that he is "open to doing a deal after the season". Two possibilities there:

1) he knows his leverage will be even higher, and he'll get transitioned for $28M or franchised for $34M. I believe him though when he says it's not all about money, which leads me to believe #2 is more probable:

2) During these latest negotiations, I believe it's possible that he either told the team, or indicated, that he doesn't want to sign a long term deal in Washington and that he wants to work his way towards free agency. In response the Redskins could have said OK well we want you to publicly indicate that you're open to a long term deal with us, so that we ratchet up some leverage in a trade scenario in February/March next year. We'll help you go where you want to go, but we want you to help us get something in return for you.

Only thing that makes #2 a little implausible is it's hard to see Snyder being willing to help Kyle Shanahan in any form.

All I know is the team's internal hemming and hawing over how good he is has led them to kick the can down a road that does nothing but give him more leverage than any QB in recent memory. It has been managed really poorly.

I'll withhold final judgment until the situation ultimately resolves itself. But if we sign him in February for a long term deal worth $28M per season or whatever it will cost, do you call that a win? How can you, when he could have been had for $20M per last season?

I've gone from optimistic to quite pessimistic. I really thought common sense would carry the day here, the Redskins let me down on that front yet again.

Common sense would also dictate that a player would take the security of a long term deal over the risk of playing on a one year deal.

As I mentioned before, if Cousins' camp doesn't value the security of a long term deal (which most players do), it is a lost bargaining chip for the Redskins.

While I do not believe the team is blameless, I do feel that this is either about Cousins not wanting to play here and/or being in for the money. If you have a player that doesn't value the security of a long term deal and doesn't want to play here and/or wants unrealistic money, how do you come to a compromise and a deal under those situations?

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

Here in this piece they say the Redskins made another offer in May, which topped the previous offer of $20M per season. Only the first two seasons were guaranteed, and the overall offer fell short of the $23.9M per season he's making on the tag.

So, just estimating, did the team offer him $22M per? I guess the guarantees weren't at the right spot, or it truly is about the money, or it isn't about the money and he wants out.

If the 'Skins got the feeling they were within $1M per year of getting it done, wouldn't they have just upped the offer? I think it was made clear to the team there's no number that would make him sign. I think this smells of Cousins being motivated to escape DC.

If the Skins aren't offering at least the equivalent of this year's tag and next in guaranteed money, why would Cousins sign it?

Let's see if both sides can come to their senses before 4:00. I'm not giving up hope until it's over.

I'm more curious to know what the guaranteed money on all of this would be. As I said before, if he's being given 50-60 mil guaranteed, he's throwing that away because he doesn't want to be here (and just taking 25 mil).

Or he's really sure that nothing is going to happen to him this upcoming season and is banking on better leverage next offseason.

Cousins is playing the game to perfection, period. Why should he take a penny less?

No deal is getting done. Ain't happening. I'll worry about next year when that time comes around. This has been beaten to death.
