Philly from this year is the case in point. Their secondary was mediocre at best and Cooley and other analysts named them as a weakness. Their LB corps was injured early on and continued to be banged up throughout their Super Bowl run. These "weaknesses" were covered by the play and depth of their Dline. Philly strategically invests in the Dline and rotates them throughout the game. Their strategy is pressure from a fresh talented Dline can and does cover deficiencies in other defensive units. It worked against one of the best QBs and game planning coaches in the league to win a world championship. I think there is a strong argument that Dline, like a good running game, is greater than the sum of their parts and positively affects other units and game aspects. It reduces the coverage time, and thus the time for the secondary to F up. It keeps LBs clean and unblocked to tackle a runner. It messes with a QBs timing and can get in his head. I don't think a team can ever go wrong by drafting or signing a game changing defensive lineman.

If we can resign Zach Brown and Breeland, sign Paul Richardson and still have the room to sign Poe. I'm ok with it. Then you can trade down and go DT, RB, G in the first 3. But I'm not sure the first part of this statement is realistic from a cap standpoint.

Re: Looking at the draft.
- Resign Brown and Breeland if you can get them for a combined 15 million, otherwise pick 1 of them
- Sign a starting LG - Sign Paul Richardson - Draft Payne/Vea and RB in the 1st 2 rounds Based on above, if needed, draft another CB or MLB asap with remaining picks. This would be my money combo of off season and beginning of draft.

Except I'd rather keep Breeland and draft a LG. I feel like it's easier to draft and play a guard than a corner. DBs need at the very least one season to adapt. Are we confortable with Dunbar starting outside opposite Norman ? Moreau could be the guy but for now I'd rather have him inside. We can't draft a CB in the 4th and hope he'll be a solid starter day 1.

But then we better get a good deal trading down, be successful with our early picks and lucky with our late picks otherwise or our defense is gonna miss some pieces.

Re: Looking at the draft.
If we don't keep ZB, May have to look at R Smith at 13, guy is all over the field

LB would definitely be in play at #13 if we can’t keep Brown. Smith is a stud. |

Re: Looking at the draft.
Yep. 13 for 21/55 was discussed in another thread. That would be great for us and vault Buffalo ahead of Arizona at 15 for a QB. They would still have 22 & 58 in addition to 13.

Re: Looking at the draft.
If he's BPA then I don't think it matters if Brown is resigned or not. Smith is worthy of being taken in the top 10.That would be a great pick for us. He and Brown would give us two serious athletes at ILB.

Re: Looking at the draft.
I'm a best player available guy.
I don't think a RB @ 13 will be the best player available...unless a crazy J. Allen situation happens and Barkkey falls. Ideally i would like to improve on the defense; especially DL, Safety or LB. But there is also a chance WR (Ridley) and one of the QBs (Allen, Baker or Jackson) could be available. If possible i would like to trade down a couple/few slots to get more ammo. |
