Re: NFC EAST Coaching Carousel
Of the five head coach openings at the end of the season, three were in the NFC East. At this point, only Cleveland remains open and they have their choice of the remaining potential HC's
Washington: Ron Rivera Dallas: Mike McCarthy Carolina: Matt Rhule NY Giants: Joe Judge One minority candidate hired (Rivera); Two NFL coaches in their 2nd stint as a HC (Rivera, McCarthy); One former college head coach (Rhule); One former coordinator (Joe Judge). I think the strongest hires are the Rivera and McCarthy hires and, because of Del Rio as DC, I give the edge to Rivera. Time will tell if it Rodgers was responsible for McCarthy's success or if McCarthy enhanced Rogers ability to succeed. I am hopeful it is the former, but have a feeling it is the latter. Rhule, who knows, college coaches have a tough time in the NFL. There have been successes, most recently Harbaugh and Pete Carroll but it seems to me that they fail more often then they succeed. Not sure Rhule is of the same ilk as Caroll and Harbaugh, but my guess is that he is not. IMHO, seems like there were other college coaches more qualified to make the leap. Joe Judge, another who knows, as they only entry so far without ANY HC experience, there really is no track record on the guy. He may be the next Joe Gibbs or the next Josh McDaniels. Seems like a pretty random hire to me.
