Throughout his career until 2019. Since then he has missed an average of 8 games a year. Missed 10 last year. Dude is toast. You want to bring him here to help with his knowledge of the offense make him a TE coach and save the roster spot.

It isn’t a huge deal, but I really don’t think the guy brings anything to the table.

He's no doubt coming here at a bargain price on a one year deal. We have the money to find out if he is toast or he can play a role in our offense. This is a no risk scenario. If he's done, then cut him. If he sticks, we'll have a veteran influence in the TE room.

You make valid points. But he's clearly better than what they have now and this draft class is weak at a position that usually takes a year or 2 to develop. I don't know which other TEs are available but this seems like a risk worth taking.

Not sure about Henry but I'd make a run at Fant as he might just be coming into his prime years.

I dont think this draft class is weak at TE. I also don’t think that a guy on the sidelines is better than one on the field.
He has really good hands when healthy but is absolutely terrible with YAC and a non blocker so what kind of wisdom is he imparting to any young tight end?

Like I said though it isn’t a big deal at all. If he can stay healthy for 10 games and shows some productivity getting first downs that is great.

Neither do I, Punch. For those who want to see some very good TE talent in this class they should take a look at these players.

Brock Bowers - UGA
Ja'Tavion Sanders - Texas. Great talent. Big play machine. Comp: Shannon Sharpe
Theo Johnson - PSU.
Tanner McLachlen - AZ. Big. Catches everything. Good at yac.
Ben Sinnott - KSU. Great hands. Runs wild in the secondary. Comp: Chris Cooley.
Cade Stover - OSU. Truly does it all. Comp: Brian Mitchell because he plays so tough.
Jaheim Bell - More of an H-Back or FB in the NFL.

We could get a productive TE in this class if we want one.

That's seven TEs projected to go in the first 5 rounds. I wouldn't call that a deep or strong TE class.

The 10th Tight End is projected to be drafted in the 7th round.

For comparison, the 10th Tackle is projected to be drafted late in the 2nd round. That's a deep/strong class.

in whole there are probably more in total number of OL men then total TE; so your observation is a bit skewed

basically OL is a bigger pool then TE to drink from

Well, it's not just an observation, it's a fact. Depending on where you look, there's maybe 12 total Tight Ends expected to be drafted at all. After Bowers, maybe two more in the top 100. That doesn't exactly scream strong class to me. Last year nine Tight Ends went in the top 101.

I was trying to make the point that the players I listed are players that I would take because they seem like players who are ready to play now. I should have said that the Commanders could probably have one of them if they want one of them enough to draft him relatively high. If they don't want to draft one by the 5th round then the TE position must not be a priority.

As for the Tackle position, if you are are suggesting that we'd better draft one in the 2nd Round to be safe, I'd say that would be wise; however, some of those Top 10 tackles may bust. Also, the tackles projected to go from #11 on might all be dog doo which would mean that this wasn't a strong class for Tackles after all.
