Returning punts?? Theismann?????

I was surprised to learn that he was a Dolphin once upon a time, so I'm not going to act like I know it's impossible that he was returning punts. But just let me reiterate the first part of my post:

Returning punts?? Theismann?????

Yeah, I think that he did returned punts his first couple of years. He was here at the end of the Sonny/Billy era and was doing anything he could to get on the field.

I remember reading once that the only thing sonny and billy agreed on was that they both hated Joe. lol.

In his 12-year NFL career, there wasn't much that Theismann, a native of New Brunswick, New Jersey, didn't deal with in some capacity. "I was hated as a quarterback and I was the odd-man out in a three-man quarterback rotation with Billy Kilmer and Sonny Jurgensen. They forged a friendship from their mutual dislike for me," he recalled. "It's true. I was not a favorite of the players or the fans because these guys were worshipped, and rightfully so, in the Washington area."

Theismann can also relate to starting at the bottom of the roster and working your way up, something many young players that star in college have to deal with on the pro level. "I started as a punt returner in the National Football League and was a third-string quarterback," Theismann remembered.

And though he was controversial, Joe T. did what Sonny, Billy K. - or anyone else - could not: Theismann brought a Super Bowl trophy back to D.C.!

"Although he was runner-up for the Heisman trophy, awarded to the best college player in the U.S., Joe was considered too small for the NFL. The Argos, however, feel they have landed one of the great QBs of the future."

Check this out

They used to have the media guide on eBay. But I guess Canuck bought it already.

Re: Did Joe Theisman ever Play with the Miami Dolphins?

If you ever hear Sonny mention Theisman he often pronounces it "Theesman", which is the right way to say it. Joe changed it to rhyme with "Heisman". They gave it to Jim Plunkett anyway.

Isn't it ironic that a decade later he would lose again to Plunkett in the Super Bowl?

Horrible game, easily my worst Redskins memory growing up. I still remember Jack Squirek (sp) intercepting that pass before half time and waltzing into the end zone!

That play is pretty funny if you listen to Theisman tell the story of what happened right before the INT.

He went to sideline during a TO, Gibbs said to run that play to J.Washington, Joe disagreed and said we should take a knee, Gibbs said it worked earlier in the year, and Joe said exactly, that is why we shouldn't run it because it's the same exact circumstance they will be looking for it, but Gibbs said run it, so Joe returns to the huddle calls the play and as he approaches the line of scrimmage he looks over at Gibbs for a last second desperation reprieve, Gibbs starts waving at him to run it, the rest is history.
