i totally disagree with you, hog. people would have been all over mr portis for not having heart, lack of hustle, or whatever if he walks off without trying to make that tackle. his hustle and determination on that play is the reason the fans of washington have grown to love him. no matter whats going on around him, us fans know we can count on #26 going full bore, 100% on every play.

Yeah, you got a point, there. It just would have been nice if he would have injured the guy he was tackling instead of himself, lol.

He was hurt and obviously frustrated, so I'm going to give him the benefit of the doubt for now.

Perhaps this was a blessing in disguise, the chances of him playing the rest of the preseason are zero to none. Let's get him rested up and ready to go for week 1.

Well, I don't agree with anyone on the team questioning whether or not they should be in the game at any point of any season. I am sure this will be addressed this morning by Gibbs and Co. and we will not hear about it from the Redskins after today other than the extent of the injury.

that play was an example to the whole team. knocking a blitzer's helmet off wasn't enough, instead you chase down a 1st string cornerback and punish him for trying to score on your team.

a "me-first" player would have been all too aware that its a preseason game and wouldn't have put in that kind of effort. he inspired the entire team on that play, i'd say even the coaches.

as a leader, i think he also feels strongly about pre-season games in general and with the brand new comissioner watching, he looked him straight in the eye and told what he thought was right for all players.

pre-season is about making the owners money, not about conditioning. They are showcases where veteran players risk injury and don't get paid and testbeds for new talent. it should just be the latter. you won't find one starter in favor of them.

You would think we would know Portis better by now. Since he's been here he's been a player that's given this team 110% effort on every play, whether it's picking up blitzing LBs or playing hurt. He's the kind of guy you wish you could clone and have an entire team full of.

He gets banged up in a meaningless preseason game, he's frustrated about it and lets his feelings be known.

Personally, I'm not going to hold it against him.

I think it's funny that some people are so quick to question someone's leadership based on a couple of words. I'm sure that his teammates and coaches understand why he said what he did and aren't questioning his leadership abilities today. I'm sure they know what kind of guy he is and they can understand why he's upset over getting hurt in a preseason game.

Our entire season could potentially be in jeopardy, isn't that worth getting upset over??

good post . . .I admit I have backed of my CP bashing stance. I still think the comment was unwarranted, but no is perfect. I still love CP26.

Injuries do happen in football, and like TAFKAS said they could happen in practice, mini camp, OTA's, basically anytime they put the pads on they are at risk. I want to see all the starters play some, but only because I want to brag to my friends how awesome our offense looks. The games don't count and I don't want the HUB of our team any more exposed than he has to be. The preseason is for evaluating marginal players.

Portis had no option, he made the tackle because he's a competitor. I haven't heard his comments, but I find myself agreeing with him. Do we really think that Portis needs the work in the preseason? Running the ball is more instinctive, rookie running backs normally have the easies transition. We have no questions about Portis, and nothing good could come of his playing in four preseason games.

I applaud what Portis said.. He spoke not only what he was feeling but echoed the comments of probably 95% of NFL players (especially vets). 30 days of camp and 4 pre-season games is an outdated concept. With OTAs there is no need for that long of a camp and 4 games. As a fan I enjoy seeing my team play as many games as possible but I understand their feelings on it.

On another note, fan's hypocricy really come out when athletes speak what is honestly on their minds. We complan about the cookie cutter worthless answers that most players give but when someone who has always laid it out for the team makes an honest negative comment people rip him for it? I don't get it.

Yeah there's really no way for them to win sometimes. If he just shrugged things off afterward people would be questioning why he doesn't seem to care.

Agreed, 100%. Portis is arguably the most talented, and definitely one of the most dedicated Washington Redskins. To hear supposed fans of this team call him an idiot or say he has no business speaking his mind irritates me.

yeah i guess i am not a fan.

He basically said the coaches should have taken him out before the first series was over. If he meant what it sounded like he said. = dumb comment. No one is saying he isn't the face of the team, or the most dedicated. That makes no difference here. I don't understand why his standing on this team makes a difference on his comments. He said what he said. It was stupid. If anyother player said the same thing it would be stupid. Again, he should have been more clear. If he is putting this AT ALL on THIS coaching staff he messed up. Doesn't mean us supposed fans are going to get off this band wagon or his.

For the record; When Stephen Davis came back from his ankle injury a few years back, he ran the ball on Washington's first offensive play of the preseason, gained 12 yards, and came out of the game. LaDainian Tomlinson runs an average of two plays in the first preseason game of each season. It's not unusual for a team to pull the starting tailback after only a few plays, especially if they're the unquestioned starter.
