Re: Reassuring video from Ken Harvey on Portis' shoulder

If it's anything like the subluxations I've experienced, it's not that big of a deal. I've had virtually every shoulder injury you can imagine, from broken clavicles to full dislocations to subluxations, and subluxations are certainly the most minor of those injuries.

The subluxations I experienced seemed to be an after-effect of the dislocation I suffered playing football. The dislocation caused some significant damage to the rotator cuff, and made me susceptible to subluxations, probably because the rotator cuff (which holds the joint together) never healed up quite right. My shoulder would sublux whenever I put significant weight on it, like when I would place a barbell on my shoulders to do squats. But part of the problem there is that when you do squats, your arms are externally rotated in an awkward position to hold the barbell, making the damaged shoulder joint more susceptible to subluxation.

It took me a couple of months to fully heal and rehab from the dislocation, due to the rotator cuff damage. But the subluxations were more of a minor inconvenience than anything else. It usually took about a week for the soreness to go away and the joint would feel normal again. I just learned to stop doing squats and find other exercises that didn't put that kind of stress on the joint, like leg presses.

I think Portis will be fine. He's a tough dude, and he'll do what he needs to do to be ready for Week 1. Guys his age mend pretty quickly, so I don't think there's a whole lot to worry about. Keeping him on the sideline the rest of the preseason will help.

I agree with Schneed, though. Springs's injury is much more worrisome to me.
