Why is there a Star on the Cowboys helmet?

When they saw Aikman sitting on the bench with that circle of stars going around his head they knew the star was the perfect logo.

Even the old Dallas Texans (moved to KC and became the Chiefs) had a star on the helmet. I like theirs better than the Cowboys' helmets.
