Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
Several years ago, I heard from a friend, who had a friend that knew Champ Bailey, that Champ Bailey said he was going to leave the Redskins when his contract was up. My reaction was, Bullshit! He's our top pick, etc.
Sure enough, when Champ's deal was up he basically forced a trade. I don't think he would have re-signed with us for any amount of money. We were fortunate to get anything for him. I think it was a 2nd round pick for Portis and the exclusive right to negotiate with Champ. The draft is overrated. There are some teams who know how to pick good players. Many do not. I would trade any team's second round pick for Portis. I read about how the importance of the draft then think of Tim Couch, Akili Smith, Andre Ware, Blair Thomas, Gary Beban, etc... There's no guarantee in the draft. I believe that consistent solid drafting is a solid way to build a team. But some teams will never get it done that way. Since George Allen, The Redskins haven't done it this way. There was a great draft early in the Gibbs/Beathard era (1981 - May,Grimm, Manley,Charlie Brown, Didier) that helped the Redskins to their glory years. But, for the most part, our teams were built with free agents or trades. Recently, when we have had picks we took Heath Shuler, Michael Westbrook, Rod Gardner,Patrick Ramsey, Taylor Jacobs and (sadly on this list) Lavar Arrington. Let's hope the players we have drafted since Joe Gibbs returned (Sean Taylor, Chris Cooley, Carlos Rogers, Jason Campbell, Rocky McIntosh) fare better. From 1999 through 2003, The Skins had 32 draft picks (including 1st round 2,3 in 2000). Only 4 of those players are on the roster. We had picks. I think Taylor, Cooley and Rogers will be solid. I'm pulling hard for Jason Campbell. Rocky is a rookie. I don't feel like he's going to be a bust. Some of the 'so called' smart teams (Patriots, Steelers) benefit from other teams stupidity and end up with Polamalu, Roethlisberger, Maroney and other players who drop while other teams pick Robert Gallery (insert bust here). Redskins got someting for nothing. |

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
Its a wash. Straight Simple. You cant look soley at this year because Portis was hurt. Bailey didnt want to be here, Portis was an incredible addition to our team, end of story, cut and dry. The 2nd rounder is questionable but otherwise, its a wash. Bailey has been great for them, Portis great for us.

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
While Bailey is the best corner back in the league, he didn't want to be here. Portis has been exceptional for the Skins, busting his body time and time again for the team. He never quits on a play and puts his body on the line even if some of the schemes don't suit his style. The guy is an elite back who lays it out there for the team - what more could you ask for? How can you even question this?

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
I know a lot of people said that we had no option because Champ was going to leave here but I the Redskins could have franchised him and protected themselves that way by getting 2 first rounders for anyone wanting to sign him (or at least work out a deal if no team wanted to pony up 2 first rounder) - so the Redskins did have an option.

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
This is correct. Honestly we both got a good deal, bc Champ didnt want to be here at all.

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
Seriously guys...Champ did NOT want to be here. He was not going to resign. He got franchised and traded. Exactly what he wanted. The Skins got one of the best backs in the league for the best corner in the league. They didn't have a #1 back on the roster and drafting guys is kinda hit or miss. Betts is very average.
Getting Clinton Portis was a great move. They essentially gave up a 2 to get this guy because there was no chance Champ was coming back. He made that very clear. He had no intention of being a Redskin the next season so they had to move him, that's what they did and they got a great back for him. It was a pretty even swap. |

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
at the time keeping champ was NOT an option, so the question was would you rather get portis? was someone else available? or would you end up with nothing?
once lavar got his money, champ was gone, and if we waited to long he wouldn't have had any trade value, since his contract would expire. |

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
there are some real bone heads on this site. even with giving a draft pick up to get CP we didnt get the short end of the stick with the trade. CP carried this team on his back last season. The last year bailey was here smoot outplayed him. PERIOD.

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
Last year I thought the skins go thte better of the deal but this year it seems as if denver did so I guess that means on average the trade has been even.

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
This one's easy. The assessment varies from year to year, but the whole impact from the won't be clear until after 5-6 years.
Last year, it seems that both teams got a good deal from the trade. This year on the other hand, it seems like Denver is up. Portis is on IR, and our secondary can't stop anyone. At this point, I'd give the edge to Denver considering they've gone deeper into the playoffs than us and they got a second round pick from the trade |

Re: Who got the better of the Portis/Bailey trade?
i don't know...i think gibbs misjudged Betts' talent- is portis our main stud? no question. is he dominant? i don't know- his average yards per carry isn't impressive (line issues...)
on the champ side, is he the best corner in the NFL? yes. are they tough to comeby? yes. but lets look at it this way...without champ we were fine in coverage (last year) with a healthy springs, etc. without champ- denver's running game has sucked. that said, they win, we don't (consistently...)

Who got the better end of the deal?
Second guessers everywhere.
