Re: Norv Turner Era: Success or Failure?
I remember thinking he sucked...but I was young. I also remember we always had a good offense and 0 defense. I hated Mike Nolan more than I hated Norv.

Thanks, that reminds me, I think I need to add to it.

Re: Norv Turner Era: Success or Failure?
I would say his mediocricy set the stage for our decent over the last decade. Turner is a nice guy. I have met him and spoke with him many times. His son played in the little league I coached. There is no questioning his character. He is also a rather good OC. We consistently had decent to above average offense under him even with less talent. Hell he won games with Gus Frerotte. But even the standup players ran roughshod over him. He is a weak manager and does not command respect. TO might actually eat him alive. If the Tuna couldn't take the TO show then I think hiring Turner will be what can only be called an unmitigated disaster. He has shown TWICE that he cannot adequately do the job. I find myself wondering what the hell Jones is thinking. Maybe he will see the light and not make the hire but I hope he doesn't.

Complete failure.
7 seasons, 1 playoff appearance, 49-59-1 record, any questions? |

Re: Norv Turner Era: Success or Failure?
In Norv's 7 years if we would have ever had a kicker we would have won 10 more games I bet and things would have turned out a little different for Norv. No question that he wasn't the best manager of people but he could run an offense.
We were in major rebuilding mode for a good bit of Norv's tenure here too. Due to bad drafting and FA's, it took awhile to win. Had Dan not blown up the team w/ the whole Jeff George debacle who knows?? So to say he was a complete failure is a bit much, as i would lay some blame around to others. JG's hasn't done much better in his second stint, so far. |

Re: Norv Turner Era: Success or Failure?
same here...I remember I couldn't even watch. It was Bret Conway I believe. He was practically standing on the logo when he was setting up. Even still, I thought we had set ourselves up pretty well for years to come. I don't blame Norv for what happened next year...that was all Snyder.

Good to hear from you 5Rings (our resident classy Cowboys fan).
Unfortunately, I cannot utter "that coach's" name after the pain he put me through. I think that he is one of those guys that may be a good coordinator, but not the best HC. BTW, I don't count his track record in Oakland as he had nothing to work with beside as a--hole for an owner. |

I remember hoping we draft Sapp & we took Westbrook. Norv decided to go w/Frerotte instead of Shuler & I know that Gus is still playing, but Shuler was playing just as well at the time. I thought Norv gave up on him too soon. Norv has probably not recieved enough grief for being partially responsible for Art Monk's departure. Monk was ready to sign the Skin's offer, but Norv said his roster spot was already gone. In all fairness, he put together some decent offenses here & it wasn't all his fault that some of those teams sucked. But if it weren't for the timing of JKC's death, Norv would've been fired after the awful 98 season. |

Re: Norv Turner Era: Success or Failure?
I have to piggy back with TMC.
I like Norv, but he appeared to have chronic discipline problems, and the team was to often sloppy. The rumor around Redskin park was lack of discipline as well, control problems. TO and his kind will give him a bad time. I don't envy him. I wish him luck (but not as much as the SKINS) Welcome back 5RINGS

I was sad to see Monk in a Jets uni, but it was probably time for him to hang it up. Its rare to see a player play for one team his entire career (Emmitt Smith, Jerry Rice, etc.). |

Re: Norv Turner Era: Success or Failure?
I just remember the Redskins' offense being very predictable and vanilla during the Norval years. I know he's known as a great offensive mind, but hell I would be considered a genious too if I had Aikman, Smith and Irvin.
