Vinny was fired but was brought back. His current role is not what it was back in 2000.

Bottom line is he's a convenient scapegoat in the front office. He's basically the MB of the front office.

So who is the real problem in the FO? Or is it a combination of person(s) or setup?

I think you have to start with Gibbs and look at the entire process/setup. This current setup is a very collaborative effort, I don't see how we can sit here on the outside and definitively point to the exact person or problem in the process to blame.

Maybe, maybe not.

Gibbs has always had one of the largest coaching staffs in the league even going back to his first stint. So he's obviously comfortable with that kind of setup.

There are many reasons for the team's slide last year and I don't think personnel is necessarily the end all answer as to what went wrong.

I think we can all agree that the current set up is not working , however, in the absence of one person to blame, i.e. Millen in Detroit, the blame has to go to who has been designated by reputation as the primary talent evaluator and that's been Vinny. The mistakes of Gibbs II have been noted so much it's not worth reapeating but it's clear that something needs fixing. Einstien said once the definition of insanity is repeating the same actions and expecting different results. Our drafting record since Cerrato has been around is abysmal, free agency has been more negative than positive, other than Moss and Portis the trading decisions have been dubious. I fear until Snyder sells the team or becomes COMPLETELY uninvolved (I know all he does is negotiate and sign checks now) we're doomed to repeat our failures of the past.

I think the problem is that the FO thinks this team is a playoff team and can win now. If they think that is the case then bring Springs back. But looking at the division we are probably looking at 3rd or 4th place. I say let him go and get going on rebuilding.

Yeah, thats the conundrum were facing right now. To quote Lovie Smith, "Theres perception, and then theres reality". But we dont know for sure which side is which. On one hand you have a team that was coming off a legitmate 10-6 season in 2005, and may very well be that good of a team for us again in 2007. On the other hand, you have a team that played very poorly for most of this season. Maybe they are way worse (older, less talented, lacking identity) than the 2005 team. The key is to find out whether or not the defense had an abberation this year (such as the 2005 Ravens did). If they did, maybe it can return to form this year. If not and there are really deep issues, time to start the rebuilding process before its too late.

The 2005 Ravens were missing Ed Reed, Ray Lewis and one more starter. And they were still a top 10 defense. The probelm was the offense kept putting them back out on the field. 05 Ravens defense did not have people running for 200 yards. There is no comparison between the two. Look at the Bears this year. They lost Tommie Harris and Mike Brown and still made the SB. Is Shawn Springs that frickin good? No way. We need help on the line, LB's and secondary. Looks like a major overhaul to me. I think that's the reality.

I think it's the 2005 Ravens. We were missing Springs most of the season. We were WAY off on Archuleta. Both of those things were just two guys but HUGE.

If we believe it to be an abberation, is it also reasonable to assume that some problems can be fixed schematicially by Grilliams?

More aggressive corner play would help I think...

Injuries happen to everyone. Both teams that made it to the Super Bowl were missing starters. It's how you overcome them and if you have quality depth to overcome them. That's the problem at Redskin Park. No quality depth because Gibbs likes to trade away 3rd and 4th round draft picks for a QB past his prime and a back up RB.

I think that would help too. At least GW realized it was a lot of the system as well. He said he's totally tearing down the defense like he did in 2004 when he first came in and creating brand new packages.

Well, if he's really a mad genius, he can make it work.

He's taking the right course of action, but this has to work for this team to win.
