Who do I HAVE to listen to. Who are THE core players? Who is the REAL head coach. Honestly, come to think of it, I think that the main reason we were all so excited when Joe Gibbs came back was because we imagined that he would bring a very clear sense of leadership and direction to the team. It may well be that his major failing has been in this regard since his return. With JG, GW and Al Saunders, we are dealing with a three headed monster in terms of leadership and direction. That seems to flow down to the players and is compounded by the overspending. The core players should get the money, and the team should scheme around there particular strengths. On the same token, the coaching staff should have a clear outline of who is in charge. It is one thing to say Joe Gibbs is in charge, another thing entirely to know he is. I think that Joe hopefully already has this figured out. It seems that he took control of the team late last season by reaserting his coaching philosophy that we would be a running, smashmouth football team. Unfortunately, it was already too late to save the season. However, I believe that both GW and Saunders got put back in there place and now the team might have a clear understanding of what they are expected to be: a Joe Gibbs football team.
With that in mind, Betts is a more than servicable starter and a very strong role player/backup with a good contract who fits the mold of a power running team. That much we know. Is Vilma one of THE two or three guys you plan to build your entire defense around? A trade like that is only worth it if your answer is yes, because you will have to pay him like a top two or three defender. The same goes for the number six pick. Is the player we draft there going to be one of those two or three guys that makes huge money and is a cornerstone of the franchise? To me, if none of those defenders fits that mold, you either trade down in hopes of landing more solid Betts type players which every good team needs, or you use the pick as leverage to get a guy like Vilma or whoever else you have decided to build around.

Betts wanted to be here, thats why HE agreed to the deal.

I also wouldn't be surprised if he re-signed with a handshake agreement that the team would still consider offers for him if it meant a shot at a starting job.

4) I don't think that we should take the Jets deal at all. The story was merely a way to show the potential value of LBetts as trade material in the "real world" of NFL GM cirlces. This is only ONE example of many RB hungry teams that could be salivating at a RB that has been a backup to start for them. Who knows his value may go up around draft time. But, we need to use that 6th pick on the best DE available, or trade down to acquire more picks. Which bring me to my 5th point...

5) We need more picks and bad! I dont think anyone realzies that we have 1 pick in the entire first day of the draft. So, if we dont get anymore picks, then we will have to go home or turn on the ps3 after the sixth pick in the first day. If not, you will be forced to watch and think about how a "Jonnie Doe" would have done for us in the rounds 2-4, where we gave up draft picks for players.

6) We need to abandon this philosophy of trading draft picks for players! Its the reason we didnt have a first and 3rd last year, and its the reason why we dont have a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th this year. It never works, either way we have a high cap hit and a player who never really lives up to expectation. The inverse is needed to stop the bleeding. So trade players for draft picks. Its so crazy it just might work.

7) Stay with the system. Every year teams like the Patriots, Ravens, and Chargers get better and deeper as a team thru the draft. We don't grow simply, because we don't draft.

8) Cut Brunell, Wynn, restructure Archuleta's contract(or restructure and trade him to Chicago to reunite with Lovie SMith), keep Shawn Springs, and maybe get a corner after the draft when teams release players to sign draft picks. Im not sold on clements or any other free agent CB.


9) Lastly, we need to go with the best end in the 1st round. I would say take a corner here, but none are worthy of being taken this high in this draft class. Trade for a 2nd or 3rd rounder to get the best CB/FS available. A plus would be to get someone who could play both (like Jimmy Williams...no, I wont stop bringing it up). In the 5th, 6th, and 7th go after DT, LB, RB(if we trade BEtts), DE(pass rush specialist-a la Mark Anderson of the Bears if we don't trade betts), and WR(if we could find a Marques Colston, Donald Driver, or Mike Furrey steal in the late round could help make WR more competitive behind Moss). Plus we need a receiver over 6' tall!!

Seriously, if we dont make moves we will have essentially the same team depth wise as last year. I dont want to have one draft pick for the first day, so make moves and build the team for the real test - who will run things when Gibbs is gone? Its 2 years away, we need to look forward to building an inexpensive, productive, proactive base of talent for when he is gone. So that we dont end up at square one again.

Any trade involving Betts will never happen. Maybe Georgey boy had just finished his first bottle of scotch and was just yanking your chain.

If we get a solid defensive lineman, then I think whoever is playing linebacker will be better. In fact, I still believe that Lemar Marshall can produce for us if his shoulder injury isn't nagging him all season. He had a good season for us in 2005, and I believe he can return to that form next season, especially if we can get a guy like Branch to clog up some holes.

Portis always speaks so highly of Betts, and while Vilma is a stud, I think it's more important that we start showing the rest of the team that we're willing to take care of our own, and award them when they play well.

I agree completely. As much as I like Vilma, the DL is more important, and to upgrade it, we really need a top 12 pick.

Now if our QB, O-line, D-line, and receivers were as good as Indy's we would win it all.

The Redskins problem is that they have so few positions where they have a good starter and backup and they have several holes. Look at last year. When Springs went down the D-literally fell apart. During the last couple of years, when Griff is hurt or out, the line looks like swiss cheese.

I don't see how the front office can ignore a legitimate trade offer for Betts when ideally, he will touch the ball 6 - 8 times a game. As far as a backup for Portis, there will be plenty of quality runningbacks available for a reasonable price. (Warrick Dunn comes to mind) There are plenty of runningbacks available every off-season.

Assuming that the Jet's rumor has some validity, I think they could work that trade with the Jets where they either keep the #6 pick or get more picks out of the Jets.

Of course the Jets would aim high with the first offer. We love dumping picks to them and Denver.

Ive thought about that possibility also matty. I would not have a problem at all if a deal was done like that. I mean seriously, if their was a understanding that if a offer came that was good for the skins and put betts in a starting role, that would be fine with me.

OUR OLINE IS JUST AS GOOD AS INDY'S IF NOT BETTER and trading betts would be the dumbest thing the redskins ever did since signing adam archuleta to a 30 million dollar deal i say we re-sign dockery pick up clements and fletcher and go for branch first but if he's gone get gaines adams that will shore up our defense leave the offense be we have weapons there and since we dont pick again until the 5th round we sohuld look for a true kick returner althugh rock did a decent job for us look at the numbers we have had 3 kickoff returns for touchdowns by rock, ladell, and antonio brown who was cut so just think if we had a devin hester, or a eddie drummond our avg starting field position was one of the worst in the league last year and i would much rather have campbell who is still developing to have to go 50-60 yards to score rather than 75-80

I can testify for the wizards story. i sit on the floor and walk into George Michaels all the time. not to mention the numerous skins and larry michaels, who are regulars during the season. This guy really does work there, they walk around with signs tryin to amp up the crowd. i even caught a burrito last year.
