Re: Davis to Cowboys....

I think it's time to praise our front office a bit for remaining cool, calm, and collected in the midst of an insane market.

We've kept our heads about us and haven't done anything to severely jeopardize our cap future.

I've been thinking the same thing so far. If we can make some moves to acquire some more draft picks, this could be one of the best offseasons in recent history.

Schneed - I agree with you - the money being thrown around on players is silly money in my book.

One question though - could the FO have at least tried to place the franchise or transition tag on Dockery so we could have at least gotten some draft picks in return or were the Skins too restricted by the cap?

Doing that would have really handcuffed us for this offseason.

Matty - I agree with you - I just hate our team losing guys without getting anything in return. Oh well - maybe Puchillo will fill in admirably or we trade down and put a rookie in who surprises us.

Some people think they richly deserve it.

Re: Leonard Davis to Cowboys....

The FO certainly deserves negative reviews based on the past, but I do think that you have to be encouraged by what we've seen so far. Sure, I'd have loved to see us sign Dock last year, but the jury was still out on him getting HALF what he just got, and I give credit to his agent for playing the market well.
I'll be really convinced the FO has changed if we trade down & grab some extra picks.
I understand why people are still skeptical, this isn't the first time we've shown restraint when we didn't have the cap space, remember when Samari Rolle was on the market in 05?
But gibbs' sounds like they've learned their lesson, and J. clayton said the same thing on espn. I'll wait till after the draft to see how much they've changed, but I like what I see so far. Letting Davis walk was a great non-move, especially since the Boys paid way too much for him.

Davis got $49.6 million, $18.75 guaranteed, with $24 million in the first 3 years. They overpaid so much. He's not even that good.

NFL teams really are losing their minds with these insane deals going to guards.

Anyone remember the shit we took for stealing Thomas away from the Jets?? I remember Lenny P slamming the Skins pretty good for giving a guard big money.

Some things never change,, Pete Prisco chided us for overpaying again for London Fletcher... yet never even mentioned the Nate Clements deal or any of the guard signings. The "journalists" and their personal grudges...
Fletcher's deal is a good one, and practically paltry compared to the goings on out there this weekend.

We as Skins fans have to accept the fact that no matter what we do, spend or not spend, we will be critisized for our moves. None of us can deny the fact we overpay free agents because we HAVE TO HAVE this guy. We get blasted because a high % of those guys really haven't panned out (there are always exceptions) I do agree that we overpayed for Fletcher. I dont see him getting 10 million up front from anyone else, but could be wrong there. I think 6 to 7 up front may have landed him, even that may be a little high for a 32 year old MLB.
We have to get use to it. that is the life of a skins fan - get blasted year in and year out for spending money - and wait for a winning season, deep playoff run, superbowl birth to justify the spending. We just haven't had that season yet. But rest assured, when we do win (and we will eventually) all those same critics will say money well spent.

I'll wait to see how they do with the draft before I heap any praise upon them.

As far as free agency goes, I believe it's been more a testament to their inability to do anything insane as opposed to their desire to do something like that.

This doesn't make any sense? Whether if you're one to look at something half full or half empty, you can't deny the fact that the front office has done a good job with free agency this offseason. We all know what Fred Smoot is capable of, and he is a definite upgrade for our secondary. And Fletcher is a 2-3 year upgrade for our team and his contract reflects that fact. I'd say they do deserve some credit for signing guys who fit well in our defense and these upgrades reflect a win now attitude, which is what the fans want as well.
