he's a solid starter. if the skins don't go to the bank on him, i'd be cool with it.

Shameless self-promotion. It is what it is.

If we get Petigout to play guard, he won't be the road grader that Doc was, but he'll probably be better at pulling on counter running plays and at pass blocking. Sign him to a lesser deal, than more power to our front office finally taking a prudent approach to free agency.

This year has been a nice departure from The Danny making every guy he signed in the past among the richest at their positions. I really like the defensive signings so far (Fletcher and Smoot) at a fair value. Add a stud DE in the draft, and this D has a chance to return to top-10 as it was in Gibbs's first two years.

I'm trying, but I just can't get too pumped about Petitgout.

I hear you, but if the price is right, he'd be a real gem of a free agent pickup. Could be one of the more underrated acquisitions this season. OL depth is something we needed, and he'd fill that role perfectly.

I thought he'd been around longer than eight years -- turns out he was drafted in the same class as Jansen.

Maybe this is what we need, someone who is much cheaper than Davis

Re: Skins interested in Luke Petitgout

Sounds alot better than going into the draft with a gaping hole in the OL.

I still think trading down and getting a pair of lineman is the best bet, regardless of if we get LP. With our caliber coaches I think it's a pretty damn good investment.

Also, What kind of trade bait is Betts at the moment? From what I hear we backed out of the Vilma trade, so what are our other options?

I'm not trying to dump him, I'm just curious to how juicy the pickups could potentially be from trading our backup running back.

Petitgout's good, but you'd think there would be a more cost friendly option out there.

Re: Skins interested in Luke Petitgout

Folks, take a deep breath here.

Molinaro resigned with the Skins for the veteran's minimum. That is the kind of player you get for that kind of contract.

Luke Pettitgout is not a future Hall of Fame player by any means; he's a good and serviceable and durable - until he broke his damned leg last year - offensive tackle. Assuming his leg is healing properly and he's not one false step from a wheelchair, he will command a LOT MORE than a veteran minimum salary.

Stinchcomb, Carlisle and Reuben Brown are offensive linemen who are free agents - unless I missed that they have signed on somewhere already. Pettitgout is no better nor worse than any of those guys. And I'd be leery of Reuben Brown because he's got to be at least 35 years old and probably 37.

The choice is a young guy who's never started much in the league or paying more than the vet minimum for one of these kinds of guys.

SC, I think you're confusing Molinaro with Pucillo

Re: Skins interested in Luke Petitgout

You're right. Pucillo - - not Molinaro. My error.

But the point remains. Luke Pettitgout - and those other offensive linemen I mentioned - are going to command more than a vet minimum salary.

Re: Skins interested in Luke Petitgout

Guard is the easiest position in football. There's a reason that until now they are the lowest paid position players. Ideally we find a way to draft a guy like 3rd round and just stick him in there. Moving down from 6 could do this.

We still need a depth guy though. Someone who can play anywhere on the line at a decent level. I wish Wade were actually an option because he'd be perfect. In fact he is probably too good. He'll be starting somewhere next year I would guess.

Re: Skins interested in Luke Petitgout

Here's some names to chew on as possible replacements:

Ruben Brown (Bears) - yes he's old but the guy can still play, he would be a good stop gap.

Cosey Coleman (Browns) - a lot of starting experience but not very mobile or quick.

Zach Piller (Titans) - has some injury concerns but he's a quality run blocker.

Rick DeMulling (Lions) - athletic lineman, excels at pulling and trapping, not very stout in the running game, lacks awareness.

Chris Villarrial (Bills) - probably on his last legs as a starter but he's got good size, strength, and experience.

Petitgout went to high school about twenty miles from me. He has maintained his southern DE roots despite his moderate success in the league. If the Redskins can sign him, I'd be delighted.
