I've heard actually that as you die, all the cells in your body start to release every endorphin and you feel total bliss. Every nerve fires, and a sense of euphoria is experienced.
Those that have near death experiences report "seeing a light". This is probably a result of your optical nerve firing off from the excessive dopamine and other chemicals. Ultimately, death at the very end is a very pleasant euphoric experience. When I first learned about this I didn't think much about it, and then it hit me. What could possible be to gain evolutionarily for having a pleasant death. Your not around to tell other about it and reduce fear to other people. It doesn't get passed down. It has nothing to do with survival of the fit. It's just some random thing that happens... Kind of cool.
