"It's a very tough deal that Vick is in. I feel like maybe at times you think (something) is not really bad till something happens. Then, oh my goodness, people are making a big deal out of it."

Now Portis was an idiot for what he said, and in general he likes to clown around with the media, but isn't this in essence the message that Portis was trying to convey. Obviously Portis' remarks came off as a downplaying the seriousness of dogfighting but I feel like thats partially due to the media spinning it that way. They wouldn't dream of doing that with LT, though, cuz he is the posterboy of the NFL.

I completely agree. I think they were trying to say basically the same thing, but Portis just tried to be funny about it.

LT also had the benefit of hearing come across as a jackass, so he knew what he should and shouldn't say when some dumbass reporter shoved a mic in his face and asked him about dog fighting.

As for this writer, I wonder if he refers to Shawn Merriman or Luis Castillo as 'lunkheads' after both were caught using steroids.

Which is exactly the point I was trying to convey with the title of the thread.

Good work Rajmahal.

Same thing? What have you been reading? Portis said that it was Vicks business to what he wanted on his property even if it was illegal. He also said that he saw nothing wrong with dog fighting. LT said he has seen dog fighting and does not understand why people could do that to the dogs. Could you explain how these are the same thing.

They are both sympathizing with the perpetrator.

So how about these comments? You think Vick would be in trouble if he was running a horse racing ring?

Jet: Dog fights equal horse races

To me what he was saying is that some animal activist would view both as cruel to animals which is true. He did not defend Vick or what he was doing. I think this is a case where they are making it sound as he was comparing the two in his view instead of making the point of activist.

He was. And he clarified it today.

But damnit! If people want to give my man Portis a hard time then it's my right as an American (flag unfurls behind me) to make a mountain out of a molehill out of Vilma's comments.

You can try but you have a weak argument. I think Portis is going to catch Sh*& about that comment for some time. Not sure who the Skins player was but he said that the players are still giving him a hard time in a joking way.

Re: Tomlinson Sounds Off on Vick Situation; No One Notices

Haha that fishing analogy is kinda how i feel about this horse racing/dogfighting thing. I'm not an activist nor do I hate animals as we have a family cat and a dog (yea i know talk about cliche). I fully acknowledge that dogfighting is cruel and inhumane, but there are authorities to handle that situation with Vick and I think we should let them take their course. Why does someone like Portis who is merely sounding off on that situation (exercising his 1st amendment rights) have to be vilified by the media and EVEN SKINS FANS? (I recall some people even saying his days in DC are numbered and that we should TRADE him!?!?!) When did the opinion of athletes interfere with their ability to play and our willingness to root for them? I think what Ali did by dodging the draft was cowardly and a cheap publicity stunt BUT i would have wholeheartedly attended his matches and cheered for him if had I been alive at the time. In a discussion about boxing I wouldn't call him a "bum" cuz of his draft-dodging and try to downplay his impact on the sport of boxing. Ditto Jim Brown and his reason for retiring. They were still DOMINANT athletes and that has nothing to do with their personal political views.
