Re: Macs

Just a quick question from a computer technician's point of view:

Why did you buy your Mac?

Well, I got it because some of my friends have them, and I guess I just liked using them better. Plus, I heard that they do not need as much maintenance as PCs. Plus, I got it for $100 off and I got a free IPOD, which was $200, because I bought it.

Nothing you pay for is for free in this world. With the kind of money you probably put down on the laptop, the least they could do was give you an iPod for "free."

I do think stepping away from the Windows world is a good thing so congrats on that

Saden have you messed around any video editing and audio programs? I was wondering how linux compares to PC and Mac on that kind of stuff.

I have messed with audio editing (audacity) and as far as video all I have done in that area is rip DVDs into AVIs. There is a whole Linux distrbution dedicated to audio and video editing It's based on Ubuntu and it's called Ubuntu Studio.

audio editing on linux is retardedly bad. they got asio drivers now, but cubase, all the plugins, don't run so hot... or at all. and the video drivers aren't always going to be up to date...

video editing is decent, and 3d modeling is good.

linux is good cause its free, and you can modify it all you want (full source etc), but only if you know how to code. It can take a while to learn for non-unix users unless it's been pre-setup as a thin client (for web terminals), myth tv box, etc.

as far as "just working" or being "easy to use", linux is always almost there, but not quite. Macs take care of that (they run on bsd, which is unix-like and somewhat similar to linux) with a very nice UI and packaged software.
