As for everyone who wants to say that this is not the way the game used to be played/older players were more classy: they didn't coddle players then either. I understand what you are saying but I think they are doing this more to speed up play than anything else. When a guy makes a first down and spikes the ball or what ever they do it takes time for the Refs to either get that ball or get another one onto the field. Also if was a ref standing next to a guy and instead of him handing me or tossing me the ball they spike it so it goes 15 yards down filed I'd be thinking "you little @&^!%^* now I have to go chasing that ball around when you could have just handed it to me".

That is a good point, but like Daseal said, there are plenty of guys on the sidelines to toss them a ball. There is very rarely a situation where a guy spikes a ball and the ref has to chase it. The only time the ball being spiked would come into play would be if a guy spikes it while his team is trying to run a 2 minute drill/no huddle. Then, the idiot is just hurting his own team.

Finally, if you want to speed up the game, stop taking commercial breaks after an extra point AND after a kickoff. That pisses me off so much. So, we get to see a drive, td and extra point or a field goal, then commercial. Come back, kickoff, commercial. I don't even find kickoffs that interesting...wtf is the reason for the second break? JEEZ!

Yep. As long as people love football enough to nervously cling to the TV during commercial break after commercial break in anticipation of finding out whether their team will do well, they will continue to fill the games with commercials.

After all, there are plenty of us out there who are unwilling to get up off the couch to even go to the bathroom for fear of the commercial ending early causing us to miss even one 4-yard run on first down.

While I'm not a fan excessive celebrations, it's amazing how many rules we have now. And it all started because the cowboys couldn't stand a simple high 5 celebration.

Obviously, however, I'm just pointing out that if they really were interested in speeding up the game then they wouldn't take the break. I know it's a necessary evil and advertising is a big reason why the NFL is the NFL today, but it's still sort of stupid to me to say that they want to speed up the game when they show commercials any chance they get.
