Additionally the front office surrendered a 2nd round pick in 2004 for him, in addition to Champ Bailey. And if he does leave what type or return does Washington get back from his four years?

Now my point is simply that a second round pick in 2004 would now most likely be a starter in the lineup. Granted Portis was only 22 when he was traded and no one could see this knee issue coming then, but the position he plays dictates that he is gonna take hits and his body will wear down a bit faster. So why surrender a pro-bowl corner and a 2nd round draft pick if you only end up getting 4 years of production?

Arguabley Champ is at the top of his game (10 INT's in 2007), and looks to be a secondary force for Denver for years to come.

If the money and the trade does not justify an investment return for just 4 years, then there is another issue all together.
His knees are fine. I would certainly take Portis in his present condition over Julius Jones at any time. Champ Bailey was going to leave one way or another so they got something in exchange, which was the smart play.

Of course, if Portis can't play due to injury again it will be hard to hold on to him, but I see no reason to think that he will not be back to form this season. He is not Gale Sayers yet. His injuries last year were a dislocated shoulder and a broken hand. I suspect this tendonitis business is largely bunk. But we will know soon enough.

I heard the Portis quote on the radio and it was completely innocuos. He was saying basically the way of the NFL is produce or be gone. Leave it to the dullards at SI to twist his statements for their own purposes.

Also, I would point out that old broken down Clinton Portis had little trouble running around Greg Ellis and the rest of the Cowboys defense when they played here last year, injuries notwithstanding.
