Re: Romo gets contract extension:

i like the idea that the cowboys have invested their success in romo . . . i think he is a servicable but not great quarterback, a .500 win guy who can get you to the playoffs but not win the big one

.500 win? He is 12-5 as a starter, that is like .705! How many other QB's in the history of the league went 12-5 in the first 17 starts? I don't know exactly, but I will wager you can count them on one hand.

And he has only had 1 playoff game in his career. Kinda hard to judge based on 1.

without going to the internet to make sure on other guys i know philip rivers went 14-2 in his first real year so thats like .875! its just my opinion on romo based on what we've seen so far, it takes a few consistently good seasons before QBs have established themselves . . . sometimes he looks good, sometimes not so good

Yes but...was Rivers in a contract year? He is still under his rookie tender. he signed a 5 or 6 year deal there and then signed his rookie tender. He has time left on his contract. Just because they went 14-2 is not a reason to renegotiate that deal with so much time left on it, no need to extend him.

What is the "barometer range" of the contract and salary at the time? Guys like Manning, Romo, Bulger are all setting the standard for these guys (Rivers, Campbell etc) when it is time to renew their contracts. Matter of fact, Bulgers contract (which was signed during camp) was used as the measuring stick for Romos contract. Both contracts are very similar.

Jeez, look at Jemarcus Russell in Oakland, rookie, never taken a snap, he held out in camp and got a monster 60 million dollar deal!

Romo is getting paid the fair market value of what a QB of his stature should get.

I actually think that, if Romo keeps playing like he has, that Dallas will have made out quite well with this deal. Tony Romo's deal is similar to Dwight Freeney's and I'd much rather pay that kind of money for a Pro Bowl QB than a Pro Bowl DE. Tony Romo's deal is also similar to Bugler's, but Romo is younger and IMO has more talent. The only reason why, IMO, Romo signed the deal he did was because this isn't the offseason and he could get injured during the season and lose tens of millions of dollars.
