OK, he can be a cap guy, and I was not challenging him. I was just saying something that everyone already knows. After a certain point, teams will being to release players. How could they not release players when they pick up 7+ players in the draft? These players can be a bargain and be adequate replacements for veterans with hefty contracts.

Except for a few new additions to CBA, there will be a litany of roster moves after the draft, leading up to and after training camp. That is all I am saying.

If no one gets released, then I am in the 97%, but if players do begin to become available after being released, like I know they will, then consider this the 3%.

We need to cut at least one person at receiver. I would wager that Mathis is gone, but I could see two people going. Either Thrash or Mix and both of them are about equal value only because Thrash is old and Mix is very young.

There is no way we are going to cut anyone come june 1. On that day we will have 9.8 mil in salary cap space...that's as soon as Lloyd is designated a june 1st cut. I wish there were some way we could reverse that decision and not have him be a june 1st cut, but i dont think there is, we would still be 4.5 mil under the cap if he was a normal cut. I think we were thinking we were going to make a big move when that happened, but obviously that didnt work out. The only thing we could still do is make a big signing when someone else is designated a june 1st cut, but i find that unlikely to happen because I dont think there will be anyone cut that we want to sign. We shot ourselves in the foot by designating Lloyd a June 1st cut, that's 5.3 mil we dont have on next years salary cap that we could have paid this year.

There are plenty of ways to get that money back if we need to. Fro example, the Redskins had some left over money last year so they wrote some language concerning incentive based pay into Godfrey's contract that there was no way he could get. Because he didn't hit his marks and get the money, the money got shifted towards this years cap (as extra money we get to spend). I think Schneed talked about this in his salary cap update thread (but I'm to lazy to look it up for you right now).

I was wondering the same thing. Schneed, Crazy is it possible to simply absorb the hit fully now? It seems to me that, since the savings wouldn't go into effect until June 1st and since Lloyd is actually off the roster, we should be able to simply notify the league that we will take the full hit now. I could see the league saying "no" if it were after the 1st as the bookkeeping would have already been in effect. But in this case, by redesignating it as a pre-June 1 cut, the benefit to both the team and player is unchanged.

Also, even if we were able to do so, would we still have enough cap room for the rookies?

Anybody know what type of deals the picks in the Skins slots got last year?

No you can't go back on it. Once you call him a post June 1 cut, you're committed to it.

But never fear, I do think the Skins will still make good use of that cap space. First, the Post recently ran a blurb saying they further guaranteed the 2008 and 2009 base salaries for Clinton Portis, which will have some sort of impact on the cap. Aside from that, I'd bet a lot of money that the Skins will extend a young player or two now this season in order to make use of that excess space, thereby allocating some of that money this year.

2nd round picks typically make about 1.5 million per season. Ballpark.
