Your expectations for 2008 might be a tad bit too high. Neither Phillip Rivers nor Derek Anderson had a QB rating of 85+ in 2007. I'd be fine with anything in the 80s. A QB rating in the 80s for someone with about 2 seasons worth of starting experience (which is how much experience JC will have at the end of this season) is decent.
Your expectations for 2009 are astronomical. Only 6 QBs had a QB rating of 95+ in 2007. I'm not prepared to say, "If JC isn't a top 5 QB in 2009, I say we junk him." To say otherwise would mean that you believe that guys like Matt Hasselbeck, Donovan McNabb, Drew Brees, Carson Palmer, Jay Cutler, Matt Schaub, and Jeff Garcia (none of whom had a rating of 95+ in 2007) don't make the cut.
