Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread

Folks,
Even if we wanted to cut Brooks, we can't....why?
He's the holder.
And though he screwed up one hold earlier this season, he has gotten that job down pat and Swishy is nailing everything.
His field goal kicking is the one positive in special teams....and since all our games are decided by a single score, we can't risk changing that.

Unfortunately, our coaches, with 2 struggling punters in preseason, didn't make the logical decision to put a backup QB as holder.
They have the best hands and also provide a threat to run a Fake.
This would have also given them the option to keep the best punter based on punting alone...which would make sense considering the poor quality of punting.

Because of this lack of forsight by Danny Smith, we are stuck with Brooks, like it or not.
I do think bringing in a punter is a good idea, but it is only "sending a message"

I would be shocked if they cut Brooks...and if they did, and we start missing field goals, Danny Smith's job may be on the line since both coverage teams suck and punt return is poor and KO return is average at best.
All Danny Smith can hang his hat on is Swishy's FG's.

That is one of the great mysteries of football. I can understand other positions taking a while to adjust to the faster speed of the NFL, but punter???? There is little to no difference in technique coming from college to the NFL, and assuming the blocking up front is sound, you can't blame the speed of the game. I think that it's more a mental block than anything when a young guy like Brooks struggles.

Ceratto should make a trip down under to look at Aussie rules guys. Sav Rocca is a field position weapon for Philly, and with the premium on accuracy in AR football, those guys should have great directional punting skills as well.

Found on the JLC blog from the internet.
Dont know of accuracy

Top Five Free Agent Punters

1. Jeff Feagles- UFA
2. Michael Koenen- RFA
3. Mitch Berger- UFA
4. Kyle Larson- UFA
5. Todd Sauerbrun- UFA

And they better not cut Brooks if they keep another punter for 1 week...someone will pick him up...he may develop long tern

First and foremost, Brooks is the team's punter though. Holding is certainly important, but it's secondary to his job punting the ball.

I forget the rules, but could they practice squad Brooks for a while?

I think so, but even if they did someone will scoop him up and that team may look like a genius when he gets a fresh start and starts hitting 50 yarders.
We can't risk that.

and sorry about not doing my homework on available punters.
I copied someone elses stuff.
bad on me.

Yet many teams are always searching for a better punter.

Right now I don't see any option but to stick with Durant and see if he can work thru it. I think coaching is a big part of it also, so maybe they need to change what they are doing or get a new coach to work with him.

It is the easiest position in the NFL. The NFL has some of the best atheletes and are the cream of the crop. The fact that there aren't a ton of good punters, doesn't change the fact that it is much easier to be a punter than a QB,WR, or even field goal kicker. Plus who the hell grows up wanting to be a punter? That could be a reason why there arent may quality punters, no one really wants to do it.

Ok then according to your theory, why even waste a position on a punter. Heck just let one of the best athletes go punt the ball. It is so easy and they only have to do it a handful of times in a game so just let your best athlete go out there and punt it. You save a position on the team for something else and you now have a guaranteed great punter. Problem solved.

He had 1 good punt- but really...is there an EASIER position in football from the college to pro level?

Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread

Well, somebody has to get fired after to losing to one of the worst teams in football.

Can't fire Chris Cooley for not putting the ball away after a nice catch and run.

Can't fire Casey Rabach for a muffed snap that caused Jason Campbell to fumble the ball.

Can't fire Jason Campbell for mishandling the muffed snap from Rabach or the pass that got tipped in the air that Pete Kendall attempted to run.

Can't fire Pete Kendall for catching the tip pass, trying his best Barry Sanders impression, coughed up the ball trying to put a move on a linebacker.

Can't fire Chris Horton for failing to blitz the quarterback on the big pass play near the end of the game when his assignment was to blitz the quarterback.

Can't fire Leigh Torrence for not making a play on the ball on the big pass play.

Can't fire LaRon Landry or London Fletcher for dropping interceptions.

But you can fire the punter. Because we all know, it was the punter that lost this game.

bad on me.
There's also the possibility some team will scoop him up and he will struggle with them as well. It's a chance you take.

Re: The Official Cut Durant Brooks Thread

I honestly don't think anyone out there will be falling over themselves to pick up Brooks right now. We could probably cut him and pick him up again next summer to give him another shot. I guess the writing is on the wall for Brooks... too bad but he didn't do much to save himself. It's only a matter of time before he really does cost us a game all by himself.

Well im guessing that you are/or were a punter. The question isnt why waste a position on a punter, its why waste a draft pick on a punter?
